HP Printer 895Cse & XP

Hi,

Just upgraded my system to XP Pro. I have a HP Deskjet 895Cse printer. XP installed the printer and it shows up under "printer&faxes" and is selected as the default printer. I printed a test page and it printed fine. Went to check it out in Notepad, typed some stuff and clicked print. Printer acted like it was printing but nothing showed up. Tried doing the same thing in MS Word, Wordpad, etc.., and still the same. Printed another test page and once again it printed fine.

I'm dumb founded. It prints a test page but not any documents. I searched HP's site and from what I can find the printer should work. And it does under "print test page". But nothing else. Tried MS support and didn't find anything there.

Does anyone have any suggestions?? I am really confused!

THX in advance for any help.

The 895 is XP compatible but only with the basic function built in drivers.  If you are connecting this via the Printer (Parallel) port, change the port mode to EPP or even Bi-Directional.  New computers come with the port default as ECP and many older printers will not reliably work with this mode.

I realize the test message prints, but there could still be issues with the port mode.  You may want to disable spooling and see if that makes any difference.

I too have an older 895Cse that still works perfectly, I use it on my 8200 XP system.  I downloaded the Windows 2000 drivers from HP.  The 2000 actually work perfectly with XP.  Just follow the directions HP provides.  The Windows 2000 driver is actually better than the drivers that came for older versions of windows, you'll have more control over features and functions of your printer.  I've been using this printer along with  a 990Cse, Epson 1270, Dell 962 and recently installed Epson R800.  The older printers all work fine with XP.  If you have any questions on installing your 895Cse using Windows 2000 drivers just send me a private message.   Remember with HP printers, install the software before connecting the printer.  Connect the printer to finish the installation.

You'll get more functionality if you download the 2000 drivers from HP and connect printer using USB cable.  Below is link directly to HP where you can read about and download driver.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the tips! I'll give these a shot today and I'll let you know if they work.

I really appreciate your time answering this.

Just wanted to let you know that by loading the Win 2000 drivers for the HP printer worked! Even though the printer is an old one, it works like a charm now on my Dell running XP Pro.

I still can't figure out why the default drivers didn't want to work but they didn't.

Thanks for all the help and Happy New Year!

Glad to hear that its working for you.  Like I said, I have newer printers, but I can't part with my 895Cse.  It still works really well and I've had no problems with it.  I pretty much use it for my everyday printer (no reason to wear out my new printers, lol).  I liked this printer so much when I got it, that I bought one for my sister and brother, and this is the printer they still use with their systems.

Sorry to jump in on this thread like this, but my problem is related.  I am using an 895Cse with XP Pro (SP2) and I keep getting a strange error message from the system tray when I print.  Specifically, the bubble reads:

This document failed to print.

Document name:  'Test Page'  (or whatever I am printing)
Printer name:  'HP DeskJet 895Cse'
Time sent:  9:39:12 AM 2/19/2005

Click here to open the print queue, and then for assistance,
click Troubleshooter on the help menu.

The strange thing is that the test page and all the documents print normally.  The error message is really more of an annoyance than anything else.

I have reinstalled the 2000/XP driver with no change.  I am connecting via a parallel port, so maybe there's something wrong with the way I have the port configured, but if there is I can't figure it out.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi tim.dodge,

This isn't any help but I will tell you this.

It may be SP2. I install all the critical updates from MS but not the SP's so since getting my problem fixed I haven't had any issues. A cousin of mine has a different HP printer, a newer one, and she had problems after installing the SP2.

She called HP support and got the prob fixed. I'll try and get up with her soon for you, (she lives about 300 miles from me and travels) and see what she found out.

My thoughts would be the service pack from MS is the problem. BUT, I could be wrong. Try looking around MS's site for your printer and see what you find and as soon as I can tell you anything I will.

Thanks boatlover -- I believe you're right on the SP2 issue.  The problems started not long after I downloaded it from MS.  I'll snoop around their sites and see what I can come up with.

Thanks again!
