Keyboard has no num lock key

I just received my new XPS 8500, and there doesn't seem to be a num lock key on the keyboard.  Hitting keys on the numeric keypad produces numbers or arithmetic symbols, not functions like "Home" and "End," which is what I've used the numeric keypad for since the 1980s.  I'm finding this extremely difficult to work with.

I found an article online that walked me through changing the registry to flip the default num lock setting, but doing so had no effect.

According to my order documentation, the keyboard is a Dell KB213 Wired Multimedia Keyboard,

I'd appreciate any thoughts people might have on a work around.  Thank you very much.

So, I'm not the only one who didn't think it would be necessary to read the manual on a keyboard for basic functions! Press and hold the "Clear" button for 2 seconds and it toggles (invisibly) the numlock on and off.

BTW:

Not sure what version of Windows you're all using, but in Win 8.1 there's an ease of access screen for the mouse which has a setting for Use numeric keypad to move mouse around screen. Make sure that's turned off. Don't know if this setting is available in Win 8.

And on same screen, make sure Use mouse keys when num lock is on is set to on.

Search for "ease of access" (without the quotes) to find that screen.

RoHe, I'm using Windows 7.

Ackimdead, thank you, but holding "Clear" doesn't work either.  In fact, "Clear" seems to register as "Delete," so when I held it for 2 seconds in my test document, it deleted about a line and a half of text.

Thanks anyway.

My Son accidentally hit the clear key when the only thing on the screen was You Tube. The entire screen went blank and the monitor said no input. I pressed the windows key and ctr/alt/delete to no avail. Had to restart computer. So much for progress.

I just want you to know that this debate y'all had just saved me from throwing expensive electronics at the wall.

Reason #1 to have a NumLock key....: because the NumLock function exists.

The keyboard packaged with our Dell came without a NumLock button. I could have lived without it. I don't personally use the non-numeric functions all that often. But then one of the cats walked all over the keyboard and turned NumLock off. I have no idea how; I've tried every combination of ctrl, alt, shift, caps lock, f-keys, clear.... I've pounded on it at random hoping to land by luck on my cat's magical combination.

And then there was an on-screen keyboard. With NumLock. And life was good again.

So thank you :)

I have a fix for this ....We went to the search and typed in onscreen keyboard, and opened the onscreen keyboard, and clicked on options and checked a box that said turn on numeric keypad and then there was a numlock button on the onscreen keyboard....clicked it and it worked.....Not sure if we are geniuses or lucky.....

Blame Mike Dell.  Not the idiot he hired.  This problem has ruined my evening and I also cannot figure out how to get Num Lock on/off.  I will go to my old key board -but this is outrageous.  Plus, the new keyboard has its keys too close together -thus breaking a 150 year tradition without warning.I should have bought an Apple. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB. --Will I never learn?!!!

I think I have a solution to your keyboard problem. Open "File Explorer." Copy and paste "Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center\Set up Mouse Keys" in the address bar of File Explorer. Go to the bottom of the window, where it says "Other Settings." "Use Mouse Keys when NUM LOCK is:" "OFF" (turn it OFF if it is ON). and check the box at the bottom of the page to be ON if it is not checked. Hope it helps.

Thanks, Num Lock Guy (I love the name, by the way).  It looks like File Explorer is a Windows 8 thing; I can't find it for Windows 7, which is what I have.

Thanks anyway.

You don't have to have "FILE EXPLORER" per se. Just open any file and copy and paste this address, and it should get you there. the address is: Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center\Set up Mouse Keys Or you may simply look for mouse set up. Strangely enough it is your mouse setting that causing the problem. Hope it helps.
