Keyboard not recognized in Device Manager

I do not like the Dell Keyboard that came with my Dimension 8250 PC.  I've had it since 2002 and decided today to replace it with a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000.  I've loaded the software as instructed.  Initially I plugged the keyboard into a USB slot, which was recommended as the preferred connection.  The keyboard does not work.  I tried again plugging the keyboard into a PS/2 - USB adapter and then to the computer and it does not work.  The original keyboard was a PS/2.  The keyboard does not appear in the Device Manager.  I would appreciate very much any suggestions to get this working.

Hit DEL at boot and initialize USB support for mouse and keyboard

But the DEL key won't work.  How do I get around that?   I'm typing this from my laptop.

Use your old Dell keyboard to get into the BIOS and enable it. Then Exit and shut off your system. Change the keyboard to your new one and it should then work.

Thanks for that suggestion.  You confirmed what I was thinking I might try.  I'll go do that right now.

Well, I did reinstall the old key board.  I restarted the PC and tried to use the del key to get to BIOS, but nothing happens other than the PC continues to boot normally.  I restarted again and hit the F2 key, which gives me some options about the keyboard, but not to identify USB vs PS2, etc. I restarted again and hit the PF12 key but again did not recognize anything that would allow installing a keyboard.  Any more ideas?
 
Is there a difference between a USB-PS2 adapter for a mouse and one for a keyboard?  I have one that has a diagram of a mouse on it.  I thought it was the same, but this is what I used when I tried to install the Microsoft keyboard as a PS2 keyboard and it would not work.
