Memory Upgrade Problem - Dimension 3000

Question

My son-in-law's Dell Dimension 3000 came with 1 Gbyte memory.  I tried to replace the two 512 Kbyte memory cards with two 1 Gbyte cards.  I bought what Crucial Memory scan suggested (it said 2 Gbyte is maximum).   When I replaced cards, computer beeps high-pitched noice on start-up attempt and stops.  Is there a BIOS setting or motherboard dip switch that I am not aware of?   Original memory: 3.00 GHz, 2.99 Ghz  did I write down incorrectly? New memory: 400 Mhz  128MX4  (this doesn't match ?)   Thanks for any help!

do you by chance have the pn of the new memory might help to identify it as what you wrote make no sense..and the numbers are nowhere close to what they should be...

It should take 2G.

I would first try to reinstall the new memory and see if that fixes it.

If not, I would reinstall the old memory and see if that is still ok. If not, then you have a new problem.

If the old memory works, but not the new memory, then try the new memory one module at a time.

I had this sort of thing happen on a laptop of mine when I upgraded the memory. I was doing the upgrade at work and my boss was passing thru my office and told me what was wrong. Try making sure the memory is properly/completely seated. It is easy to overlook that they are clicked in place. The system won't boot up if the memory modules are not completely seated.
