Multimedia audio controller problem
Hello,
I recently had to reformat and reinstall Windows XP Pro on my system due to a nasty virus. Before install I went to dell site and downloaded the driver programs onto disk. I then installed them in this order. Chipset then video then Lan then audio. I have done this many times before due to mobo failures on the Dell GX 270 series of capacitor failures (but that is another issue). I have 5 GX270 and I have never had this problem before. I am at wits end!!! The driver is where it is supposed to be but even when I force install to find it, it doesn't recognize driver. I usually don't have to do this since it usually just installs fine with dell dowload program (R58182). Everything else loaded just perfect except sound. I read somewhere that SP2 could be the problem? Someone else said to reset the CMOS battery? I don't know. Any help would be appreciated. :emotion-9:

The multimedia audio controller is part of the sound drivers. And, if the chipset drivers are installed, the sound chip will be recognized and the sound drivers install. However, since apparently the sound drivers are not installing, check the BIOS and make sure the Integrated Audio (may be labled Legacy Audio in the BIOS) is enabled. If it is enabled, do a BIOS reset and see if that helps. Reinstalling the chipset drivers again is another possible issue if they did not fully or correctly install inititially.

Well I installed a Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 card I had laying around and reflashed the BIOS and made sure audio in BIOS was enabled and the Soundmax drivers installed! I installed creative 5.1 drivers and that one was recognized and installed as well. Thanks for your help. :emotion-11: I guess resetting the bios did the trick. Should I disable the legacy integrated audio in BIOS now that I'm using the Sound Blaster 5.1 card? Just curious.

Yes, if you are using a separate sound card, disable the Integrated audio in the BIOS. You can only have one sound card that is "default". Also, disabling the one not being used will save it from loading at startup and the memory it would use.
