NCQ drives are not NCQ?

I posted this to Storage forum but go no response - I ordered an 8400 with 160GB NCQ drive.  The delivered PC has a Seagate drive with a xxx 23 suffix.  I checked with Seagate, and they confirmed this does NOT have NCQ capability.

After about 10 emails with Dell support, they do not seem to understand the issue.  There is no way of enabling the NCQ I can find on-board.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?  What other drives are Dell installing that have NCQ?

Hi,

Please share with us the HDD serial number and model number, you may find it in the HDD itself, or running the HDD diagnostics, 'Hold down Control + Alt + D' at the same time while you see the Dell logo on the screen.

I have a ST3160023AS - this is what Seagate said:

The ST3160023AS drive (OEM or not) never supports NCQ.

The following Seagate model numbers support NCQ:

ST380817AS
ST3120827AS
ST3160827AS
ST3200826AS
ST3250823AS
ST3300831AS
ST3400832AS

 Seagate Technical Support

The drive was specified on the order page and the packing slip as installed in the Dimension 8400.  The physical drive does not match what was actually sold and installed.

Hi,

I mean, if dell charge you for that disk, or they just miss it in the order and charge you a standard HDD.

Well if Dell advertises the drive as supporting NCQ then they should replace your drive.   I do not think NCQ is something you need to enable.   I have an XPS Gen 2 system with Seagate, over a year old and it does not have the NCQ but I think this is a more recent think Segatge added to there drive line.   Looks like something that could help on performance.   If I ever replace the two drives I have mirroed I may consider ordering NCQ models

Good luck with support but like I say if they advertise the feature they should replace your drive..

Spoonman,

Did you get the xxx 23AS as well?  Did they replace it?  If so, with which model?

Thanks

They have done the same too me.  I also checked with Seagate and they have advised the ST3160023AS does NOT support NCQ.  The model number should be ST3160827AS.  Dell has been insistent on giving me a hard time with this one.  I'll let you know what the outcome is.  It's a matter of paying for something I didn't get.

Yo .... anybody still out there on this issue.   I just stumbled upon this posting and sure enough, I have the same non-NCQ compliant ..... or at least I have the ST31160023AS.   Did any of you guys make any head way on this?

Also, in case there are some experienced peep's out there .... I currently have a RAID 0 set up using 2 of these hard drives.  This is what came with my computer when my company ordered it.  Unfortunatly, in the RAID 0 configuration I'm twice as valnurable to a hard drive crash since each drive is dependant on one another.  Therefore, am considering adding 2 more of these drives to my computer in a RAID 1 configuration so that I have a safer place to keep my data (i.e. RAID 1 maintains 2 copys of data  if I'm not mistaken).  My concern is that I'm not sure if the Dimension 8400 will support such and upgrade and if so whether i will need to for any reason reinstall my OS if I keep it on the original drives in the RAID 0 config.

Thanks;
Boss Man

The OEM version of the ST3160023AS that Dell ships apparently does support NCQ technology. In order to check, try running Intel Application Accelerator (if you don't have it you can download it from here ) and have a look of the properties in the drives section. It should be able to identify if NCQ is enabled on that drive. I've not tried this personally as I can't lay my hands on this drive but I have been assured that this works.

At the risk of sounding cyncical, did you by any chance have any non-NCQ drives on the machine that were correctly identified as not supporting NCQ? Given the way NCQ works, there's not a lot you can do to prove it's working but at least if the app could be proven to distinguish between supported and unsupported drives we could show some level of reliability in this test.

Incidently, apparently NCQ will not kick in if AHCI is not enabled in the bios - check that Drives \ SATA Operation is set to Auto / AHCI. Again, this is what I've been told, I don't have a test machine to check it out.
