New Order Strategy

Question

I recently had my XPS 720 order cancelled due to the monitor (2407 WFP) being backordered.  After reading many complaints about delays and cancellations, it appears the LCD shortage is the culprit.  I already own a 2407 WFP but want a new one with my XPS 720 so I can run dual monitors.  The point is that I can wait on the monitor (if it's backordered) but I really want the computer.   I thought I'd check and see how much more it would cost to order the computer without a monitor and then order the monitor separately.  That way, my computer will not be cancelled or delayed because of the monitor.  Much to my surprise, it was actually $81 cheaper doing it that way.  If you order the 2407 WFP with the system, it costs $650 (versus ordering 'no monitor).  If you just order the monitor, Dell is currently offering it on sale for $569.  Shipping was also free so that didn't add anything.  So, now it looks like I'll save some money and if that was the real reason my last order was cancelled, I should be getting my XPS 720 in the next couple of weeks.

Wow I guess I got in just before the shortage.  I got a 2407 with my 720 but when I ordered it caused a 2 day delay which wasn't too bad.  I ordered mine on July 19, it shipped July 29 and arrived August 3.  So it took exactly two weeks from ordering for it to be delievered.

It sounds like you beat the LCD shortage.  I just cannot believe that Dell didn't even contact me before cancelling my original order and didn't even delay it.  Anyway, even if the monitor is delayed now, I will be able to enjoy the new XPS 720 with the one 24-inch widescreen I already have.

I agree...  you think common sense would say...  'let's at least ask the customer what THEY want to do...'  Why give up a fairly expensive order without at least asking the customer first??? Makes no sense...

If you're as lucky as me... you'll have the system in about 1 week. I ordered on June 25th, it shipped on June 27th and arrived early morning on the 3rd of July. Less than 192 hours from placing order to opening the box...   Don't hate the player... hate the game!!! Or, something like that...

UPDATE:  A quick summary - I had my first system cancelled due to backorder of monitor and my second order delayed because of it.  So, I decided to order the computer and monitor separately.  I placed those orders on the evening of August 9th and I received e-mail notification this morning that the monitor SHIPPED August 9th!   So, where I thought I'd get the computer before the monitor, I'll actually get the monitor first.  I just don't understand how Dell can cancel/delay orders for the monitor, but be able to ship the monitor immediately as a separate order.   What that leads me to believe is that my order cancellation/delay was not really caused by the LCD shortage, but it's becoming a convenient excuse for customer service when people call.

Wow that's odd.  The monitor could be shipping from a different location than where built systems come from.

The monitor shipped from Austin (Round Rock).  The computer will probably ship from Tennessee.

VDP, I don't see any reason to be 'scared' concerning your order.  The biggest delays I've read about concern monitors/LCD screens so I would think that ordering without a monitor should speed up an order, if anything.   Like you, I already have a Dell 24' widescreen monitor and only wanted a second one to run dual monitors so I ordered it separately from the system.  The interesting thing is that the monitor shipped the same day I ordered it (yesterday).  I just got confirmation on my XPS 720 order and the estimated shipping date is August 17th (one week from order).  Now, I'll just wait and pray that it does ship on time and is not cancelled (like my last order) or delayed.

Well seeing as I already had a 24 inch flatscreen, I don't know if I should be excited or scared of my XPS 720 order i made today without a monitor.     hmmmmm :robotsurprised:

Yea...  that's crazy that they said it was the monitor holding you up, but then the monitor shipped right away.    But I've learned from a few previous Dell purchases that the right hand often doesnt know what the left hand is doing.     Hope our systems come in quickly!   My XPS laptop has served me well since Hurricane Katrina ate everything I owned, but it's finally time to run on a monster!
