"Open With" Program

I have a program that I deleted long ago still showing up in the "open with" menu. How do you change or get rid of this? There is no listing of this program on my "C" drive.
Thanks

Thanks, goonboy and Kay H. for the suggestions. Nothing has worked yet, but I will keep working on it.

Hi John,

It sounds like whatever this program was, it left a decent-sized hook in your registry, because that's the last place you can look in order to remove all traces of it.

What you can do is to regedit and run find/find next clear through your registry--it will probably take a bit of time, up to 15 minutes or so, for a deep hook, to remove all keys associated with this program.

The way you do this is to go to Start | Run | regedit | OK. Whe the regedit utility opens, choose Edit from the top toolbar. Choose Find. If you can remember how Windows referred to this program in path statements, that would be ideal--enter that exact name into the field. If you cannot remember this, you can either try to guess the name and see if regedit can find it, search for the manufacturer's name and see what that path statment name was for the program, or just search on the term open--that's the one that will take you a while, because it will bring up all the open-with programs, and you have to isolate the desired one. OK, so enter a name in the field, and click Find Next. When you find any instance of this program's name, delete the key. Since this program is not on your hard drive, and Windows is running just fine, this will be a safe regedit for you to perform. After you've seen the first reference to your search term, click the F3 key to find next. If you are using the term open, as it finds keys, you will highlight command to expose the program referred to by this key.

As regedit searches, the system will appear to hang for a short time--it hasn't; just be patient and it will pop up the next instance when it finds it. Keep pressing the F3 key instance by instance until regedit announces that it has finished searching the registry.

That's about the last thing I can tell you to do--it's the only other place on your system that this call can be coming from--you might do this: go to Start | Run | msconfig | Startup. Make sure there are no references to this program there which are being used by unchecking any that you find related to the program, OK? That's really, truly, the last thing I know to do for you, but others may have more ideas.

Good luck,
Kay

Kay,
Thanks for the in-depth reply! I have printed it and have it in my resource file.
I had always dreaded tinkering around in the registry because of the horror stories surrounding it.

In the meanwhile, I found a downloaded file I had called Regclean. I ran it and Mr Pesky File label had disappeared!

I really appreciated you knowlegeable response. You and many others are what makes this forum so enjoyable. A great help in time of need!

Hi John,

No problem at all--I'm so pleased that you'e gotten rid of the dumb thing. RegClean is a nice program, and safe to use, if you be careful; err on the side of caution when you delete registry keys. In terms of software which has been uninstalled, removing keys specific to that software is good and safe, as long as Windows is otherwise running fine.

Thanks so much for letting me know how this worked out; I'm always glad to hear a problem has been solved :) --it makes my whole day...

Talk to you later,
Kay
