OptiPlex 9020 Hard Drive Failures. Large Number of Hard Drive Failures With-in Last three Months.

We have had a large number of Toshiba hard drive failures with-in the last three months. Anyone have any knowledge of the issue?

1. General instability (windows freezing, system unresponsiveness, application crashes)

2. Extremely slow response

Running the built-in BIOS diagnostic turns up one of the following error codes on the hard drive component:

2000-0141

2000-0142

Some specifics on our environment:

Windows 7 64-bit (standard image)

2.5" hard drive

z123aaa,

I searched for any issues with these hard drives and found nothing to relate any isues.

The Dell error code 0141 is a hardware related error which appears when you first load your Dell computer. The error that normally appears will have the error code “2000-0141” and will relate to the hard drive components of your computer. This error generally shows even though there might not be anything wrong with your PC. Here’s

What Is The 0141 Error?
The 0141 error is a problem caused by an issue / mismatch between the hard drive and your operating system of your PC. The error is typically shown to warn you about the lack of an Internal hard drive, but if there’s one in your system it suggests that this problem is caused by a mismatch inside the Windows system. The typical causes of this error are as follows:

Corrupt or damaged Windows processes
Damaged registry settings on your system
A computer infected with viruses or malware

The 0142 error is a failed or failing hard drive.

One other thing you might do is check the serial numbers and/or date codes on the drives.  If they're all close to each other, I'd guess a bad batch of drives -- or a batch of drives that suffered some type of physical damage before they were installed in systems.

Do your 9020s have mechanical hard drives or SSDs? I ask because I have a brand new batch of OptiPlex 7040s with SSDs showing 2000-0142 errors during diags and I am starting to think it could be a false positive in the diags.

Drives die.  Its not a matter of If its a matter of when.  How the drives are used is related to when they die.  Environmental factors as well as run time aka 24 x 7 or 8 hours a day etc.   Systems covered under maintenance get replacement drives.   Systems that went out of maintenance are not elligible for replacement drives after the warranty period.

I work in a college and we have these machines in our library. I've been on the job since February and I've replaced at least 40-50 drives and that is a conservative estimate. We initially thought there might be something wrong with the power but we've had electricians come out and test and everything checked out OK. This is the first post I've seen about mass HDD failures in the 9020s. I've been replacing at least 1-2 drives a week for the past few months now.

There is a reason why drives come with 90 day , 1 year, 3 year  max 5 year warranty. The 9020 represents a model that went end of life after 3 to 5 years. AKA 2013 TO 2018 IS 5 YEARS.  Dell does not warranty systems or drives for more than 3 years without a warranty extension which is 2 years max.  This is consistent with 5 YEAR life cycle.

This is like saying there are massive numbers of humans dead after 100 years and that its because they live in the united states.

Hard drives die, Humans die, its not a matter of IF its a matter of when.

It is not inconsistent or a flaw that 5 year old systems hard drives are dying.

There isn't a massive failure of a specific model. There is an overall death of drives after 1 to 3 years.

Annualized Failure Rate (AFR).

AFR is similar to MTBF and differs only in units. While MTBF is the probable average number of service hours between failures, AFR is the probable percent of failures per year, based on the manufacturer's total number of installed units of similar type. AFR is an estimate of the percentage of products that will fail in the field due to a supplier cause in one year.

AFR and MTBF specifications are based on the following assumptions and environments:

  • 8,760 power-on-hours per year.
  • 250 average motor start/stop cycles per year.
  • Operations at nominal voltages.
  • Systems will provide adequate cooling to ensure the case temperatures do not exceed 40°C. Temperatures outside the specifications will increase the product AFR and decrease MTBF.

Hard drive reliability is closely related to temperature. By operational design, the ambient temperature is 86°F. Temperatures above 122°F or below 41°F, decrease reliability.

Seagate IMHO is the worst and their 2 year max warranty reflects this.

There are only 3 makers of hard drives left in the world.
