Paging file configuration and help & support

Question

Hi..I have a couple of problems..as alwaysand wondered if anyone out there knows the answers.

Problem 1

Every time I log on I get a message telling me my paging size configuration is 'faulty' and tells me to go to setting in advanced tab in the system and change it from 'let windows choose' to 'custom'. I keep going in and setting it to custom and i change the configuration setting to a 'recommended' level that they state. It has no effect and changes nothing. If I don't do this it won't let me log on time and time and time again until after 'ten' or so switch on and offs of my computer it eventually lets me log on after giving me this annoying message.

Problem 2

I cannot access any information in my help and support group which is really annoying as the answers I need could be in there. Just keeps telling me page cannot be accessed with a few reasons why but this is for everything and anything I try to get help with. I have tried to put my operational disc in (I'm on windows XP) and do some repairs but it doesn't solve these problems.

Does any knowledgable person out there have any info that might help me...damsel in distress!!

eek! Yes..it's a possible option. After doing this about 3 times in the last 6 months due to not having some critical updates from microsoft and not having the lastest chipset driver for my Nvidea it is not a pleasant thought. It's a nightmare task I'd prefer to leave until all other options are exhausted...but thanks for your reply orbs..much appreciated

you might start considering a clean reinstall instead of a repair. this will totally replace the old windows with a new copy. but you will lose data also. unless you backed them up first. also after the new copy is installed, you have to reinstall all the programs that came with your computer.

If not..it's gonna be orbs suggestion of a re-load..yuk!

Yes Rob..it's the biggest P.I.T.A I can think of with this computer. Well..I have read and read and read and done a million calculations with the paging size figures. I have made sense of it and put in the correct figures as instructed but to no avail. As I know I am entering the correct figures I gotta ssume I have another problem..

I'm getting closer and closer to that re-installation..

Jez-

I looked for your post on the 'software - windows XP' board but could not find it. I suggest you copy and paste your original post to that board. You may get more help there.

If possible, provide as much information as you can about the history of this problem. How long has this been happening? Have you tried using 'system restore' to restore the OS to a time before the problem started?

I had to do 3 clean installs before I got everything straight when I got my 4600. The first was to correct a bad factory installation and start fresh, the second was because of a hardware conflict that prevented me from starting windows, and the third was when I was unable to successfully restore a drive image to a new hard drive.
