Power Light Blinks Amber

Question

I have a Precision WorkStation 330 and the power light blinks amber. When I push the power button the computer does not boot. The light on the motherboard comes on as well as the case fans and the power supply fan. I replaced the power supply and had the same results. I then replaced the motherboard and still have the same results. Is it possible the power button is bad? I am not sure what else I should try.

After startup, with the power button light flashing, does the system power down when you hold the power button down for say 5-6 secs? If it does, likely there is nothing wrong with the power button.

Do the 4 diagnostic lights on the rear panel show anything during the process?What operating system are you running?

The 4 diagnostic lights on the rear panel do not light up at all. I am running windows 2000, but right now it is not ever doing a post.

Yes it goes off when I hold the power button down. I talked to Dell's out of warranty tech support today and they suggested that it my be the cpu.

If it is not the PSU or the motherboard, then you have the RAM, cards, drives and the CPU as the possible suspects. I would try pulling everything except the motherboard and PSU and see if you can get the PSU to at least startup (power light goes green). Then add devices back until you find the problem.

Flashing amber power light is almost always a faulty PSU. If not, its most likely an MB.

I have pulled everything out of the computer. The only thing left on the motherboard is the power supply. So only the power supply is connected to the motherboard, I pulled out all cards, ram, and cpu and I get the same results.
