Power supply optiplex 745

Hello:

I'm spanish customer.
I own a 745 and I consider to upgrade the graphic capabilities of the system. Nevertheless, the power requirements of a high end graphics card (like nvidia 8600GTS) are superior to the power supply of the system (350 Watts recommended, 280 watts in the 745).
Exists the possibility to upgrade the power supply? Via Dell, via another vendor?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.

Nacho Garcia.

No, unfortunately the chassis is desktop, and the power supply size is more little than a standard PSU.
But if you say that the connector and power requirements of the mainboard are both standard, the size is a minor problem.
If you are sure about this point... ;-)

Thanks and regards.

Nacho.

if you've got the 745 with the mini tower then any ATX psu will work and you do need to 24 pin connector for the motherboard

You need low profile video card.

Full size cards like 8800 wont fit in your case, even if you upgrade UPS.  Most low profile cards are geared for Home theatre pc market and usually come with passive cooling and HDMI out.  Unfortunately, this means they will not be running faster graphic chips.

Fastest low profile card I've seen was running Nvidia 7600GT, but they are not available in most country.

Best you can get is either Nvidia 7600GS chip or ATI X1600/1650 chip.

I would go with Nvidia 7600GS card.

Well, as you probably know, all desktop dell models have an accessory named raiser card, that enables the system to mount any PCI or PCIe card, of any height.
In fact, I have mounted a nVidia 7300 with a small 450W PSU, and the system works fine.
My last problem is that the psu is a little noisy. I will continue searching a more silent psu, and I will thank any advice about this matter.
Thanks for your answers.
