Problem with Display, Screen Resolution and Nvidia GEForce 8300 GS
Hi,
I'm not sure which direction to turn so I figured that I would try here. Yesterday our Inspirion 531 desktop (running Vista) screen was blank so I did a hard boot on it. When it came back up the screen had vertical lines on it and all of the colors were distorted. The screen resolution was also set to the lowest level (I believe 600X840) and it cannot be changed to anything else. I checked Microsoft and did a general web search with no results. I then went into the hardware device manager to see if anything looked out of place with the display. The Nvidia GeForce 8300 GS no longer had a driver so I attempted to download one from Nvidia. That didn't work - it said it could not load driver and gave me a Code 43. I'm not overly technically inclined and was sorry to see that my warranty had expired about 6 months ago. I'm assuming my video card is dead but, like I said, I'm not overly technical. I also read about Dell having other problems with Nvidia. Any insight into what I'm experiencing would be great. While I'm doing fine on my HP laptop, the Dell desktop is our family computer and we need it for just about everything.

Code 43 says that the device has "failed" and the drivers were not loaded. However, before you buy another video card, "reseat" the card and see if that helps it.
Reseat - with the PC powered off, open the case and remove the card, then reinstall the card making sure it's fully and correctly seated. You will have to disconnect the monitor connector before removing the card. HERE is the Dell manual on removing the Video card.

My 531 Inspiron has suffered the exact same problem this morning with the Geforce 8300GS. I have taken it out and reseated it but to no avail. I would try the card in another machine but they only have the old AGP slot which is no use.
Did you find a solutionto your problem or did you just purchase another card?

Sorry - unfortunately probably not good news, but we ended up replacing the card which took care of the problem (though were were out $60!). Good luck!

We tried unseating the card as recommended on a previous posting but, unfortunately probably not good news, we ended up having to replace the card. That took care of the problem (though were were out $60!). Good luck!

Did you replace the damaged card with a new card of the same model type 8300 GS, or did you buy a different type of video card such as the more powerful Nvidia 8600 model?

We ended up getting a Nvidia 8400 - was powerful enough for us and seemed like a good compromise on price/performance. Has worked fine since installation w/ no problems.

The 8300 GS is an OEM product only. The 8400 GS is the retail version. If you know it is your video card, you can easily get the 8400 GS for $30 - $40 at Newegg and even less with a rebate. The 8600 GT is really not around anymore since it has been replaced by the 9500 GT HERE and again with the GT 220, but I would not get the latter. Even a 9400 GT would be better than the 8400 GS and will cost only around $40 HERE and you will get a lifetime warranty from BFG.

Good info - we did this awhile ago and it sounds like there are new and improved (and cheaper) cards now. Good luck to those of you having the same problem!

I'm suffering from the same problem. I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and noticed the Windows 7 splash (startup) screen is in the correct resolution. I guess this means my card is OK?
Hope someone still looks at this topic.
