Registry can't load hive file

This morning PC won't boot.  Boot in safe mode and end result is following message:

C0000218 {Registry file failure}: registry cannot load the hive file; systemroot\system32\config\software its log or alternate is corrupt, absent or not writable

Everythiong working fine last night when shut down.  No error messages on shutdown.  Any help on what the problem is and how to fix would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Power on, press F12, and load the Dell diagnostics. Run a full test. If the drive shows bad sectors, replace it. It may be possible to read the data from the drive - to try, mount the drive in a working system or an external case and attach to a working system. DO NOT try a repair/recovery without a backup of your data FIRST.

Assuming the hard drive has no errors, read this to fix the hive:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_sys32.htm

Don't run repair/reinstall until you try this. Repair/Reinstall will require you to download and reinstall all XP updates and hotfixes again, but the procedure from Kelly's Korner doesn't.
