You need to obtain the Dell reinstallation discs, if you reside in the US and are the registered owner of the computer, a disc containing the factory-installed operating system specific to your system, can be requested from HERE.

The procedures for the manual reinstallation of Windows, drivers and applications, are HERE

shesagordie (Bev), Thank you so much for that information it helped a great deal! I tried to call Dell and they kept on telling me I would have to pay for support? I finally saw the contact form on the link you supplied and they are now sending me a Operating System CD and gave me links to Driver downloads. Thanks again for your help.

Bev, Would you know if the 4 CD's listed below will be enough to get me online so I can download the drivers I need?

Tom

CDs included in the dispatch:
Operating System CD
Application CD
Cyberlink Power DVD
Roxio CD

I would like to inform you that as the system is no longer in production, the drivers CD is not available. However; we can download / install the drivers from www.support.Dell.com web site.

Yep, they are what you need, the drivers for the 5100 can be downloaded from HERE

Download the drivers to a folder, you need to create on the PC you are using.  After all the drivers are downloaded, transfer them to either a USB Thumb Drive [my favourite], or burn them to a CD.

Connect the thumb drive to a USB port and transfer the folder to the drive, using the 'Sent To' Menu.

Note. Do not use the Dell download manager, use download them directly the browser.

Connect the USB drive to the 5100 you wish to install the drivers on, go to My Computer, click the USB drive to locate the folder, open the folder and install the drivers.

The correct order for installing the drivers, is HERE

Bev, Thanks very much again for your help! Two more questions if you don't mind: The first thing after the new hard drive installation is to install the 4 CD's that Dell sent Correct? Then install drivers in order correct?

I will get the new hard drive in about a week I'll let you know how I make out. Your help has been very much appreciated!

Tom.

The Drivers and Download page you gave the link to, is blank, except for "Emailed List 10/02/2010 14:03:56".

The only Network driver Dell has available for 5100, the 'Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection', that's for their integrated Network Card.

All the XP Dell Drivers for the 5100, are HERE

Hi Bev, What about the Video adapter & Modem there are several choices and  #9 on that list references Touchpad, Pointer etc could not locate that on list? It's somewhat confusing but I'm determined to succeed! Does it make a difference if your download too many? I just downloaded what was Dell recommended or critical?  I hope that I'm not bothering you too much with these questions, you have been very generous with your advice!

Tom.

You are confusing me, the Dell Dimension 5100, does not have a touch pad, or a pointer, these are for Laptops, not Desktop systems like the 5100 and I don't see them listed on the 5100 Drivers and Downloads, I posted

Regards to the Modems they are Dial-up internet connections, are you using a Dial-up, or DSL/ broardband connection?

Are you using a PCIe x16 video card, or the intergrated graphics?

Anything that says 'Firmware' you don't need.

Sorry Bev, Not trying to confuse you! I believe this is the link you sent that I printed out, look @ #9

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/driver_install_order?~lt=print'

"Regards to the Modems they are Dial-up internet connections, are you using a Dial-up, or DSL/ broardband connection?"

 V.92/56K PCI DATAFAX,INT MODEM,DIM,TIED (I now use broadband from Brighthouse Cable w/AOL)

"Are you using a PCIe x16 video card, or the intergrated graphics?"

128MB ATI HYPER MEM PCI-E X16 X300SE,DIM

It must be a miracle but with your help this is starting to make sense to me

Tom.

The 'Driver Install Order' list, is for both Desktop and Laptop computers and needs to be used in conjunction with actual system's Drivers and Downloads

As you are using broadband, modem drivers are not required, you need to use the Network Driver.

Here's a list of the basic Drivers for your 5100, in the order of installation:

1) Dell Desktop System Software

2) Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility
