replace or fix old computer

Question

I have an XPS T800 which is now 6 yrs old. I have to replace the graphics card and CD player. I am wondering if this will hold me for awhile or what to expect next. Do motherboards and CPU's wear out? How about fans? Should I do a prophylactic replacement there? The hard-disk occasionally makes more noise on reboot, but not bad and it doesn't last long.   It is serving my modest needs for now except for wanting a CD-DVD RW capability.   Thank for you advice.

Just replace the items that are not working now if you can't get a new computer and consider used parts to save money. Backup your hard drive and consider buying a new one. Hard drives don't make unusual noises unless they are on the way out. Save your money for a new computer. 6 yrs is very good service and new computers can be bought for bargain prices.

Save your money, and wait until intels new chips come out this month, which is Core 2 duo or Conroe.
