scan disc
My scan disc takes about 6 hours to run. I get a message that says something is running and the scan would go faster if I closed it. I have closed all icons on system stray, and have went to CONT+ALT, DEL, and closed everything there except systray and explor. What in the world could be running? or what is causing this program to run so slow? Where else could i look for a running program on this machine?
One thing that did happen was the machine changed my e-mail icon. I also lost my address book and when i went to resolutions, i could not return the system back any farther than 4 days. all else was lost. don't know if that has any bearing on my problem or not.

Thank you for using the DellTalk forum.
Try the following steps.
1.Shut down all background programs using MSconfig.
Left-click on START | RUN.
Type in "msconfig" in the "Open" dialog box and left-click on "OK."
When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, the "General" tab will be visible. Left-click on "Selective Startup."
Remove the check marks from each choice except "System.ini," by left clicking on the check marks.
Click the Startup tab.
Uncheck every entry except SystemTray.
Left-click on "Apply" and then left-click on "OK."
A message will appear stating that "For the changes to take place, the system must be restarted." Left-click on the "OK" button, and the system will begin the restart.
2.Once you have booted back to Windows, try to run
Scandisk again.
3.If Scandisk is successful, return the system back to normal.
Click the Start button, click Run, and then type msconfig in the Open box.
Click OK.The System Configuration Utility window appears.
Under the "General Tab", click the radio button next to "Normal Startup."
This should take the check out of the radio button next to "Selective Startup"
Then click Apply and OK.
Then restart the system.

When I click msconfig, I get the same message. How do I remove the programs from the task bar?
Thank You, Frank

Boot into Windows Safe Mode, then change
the MSconfig setting to what you want. From there, reboot
the system and it should be the way you want it.
How do I enter Windows Safe Mode?
For Windows 95------------------------------------------------------------------
Method 1
Restart your computer.
Press the key at the Starting Windows 95 message.
Method 2
Restart your computer.
Press the key at the Starting Windows 95 message.
Choose Safe Mode from the Windows 95 Startup menu.
Press the key.
Method 3
Automatically, when Windows 95 did not start on the previous attempt.
For Windows 98------------------------------------------------------------------
Method 1
Restart your computer.
While your computer restarts, press down and hold the [Ctrl] key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears.
Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.
Press the key.
Method 2
Click the Start button, click Run, and then type Msconfig in the Open box. Click OK.
Click Advanced.
Click to select the Enable Startup Menu check box.
Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted.
Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu, and then press the key.
Method 3
Insert a non-bootable floppy disk in the floppy drive, and then restart your computer.
When the message Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready appears, remove the floppy disk from the drive.
Press the key twice.
The Windows 98 Startup menu appears.
Choose Safe Mode from the list, and then press the key.
Method 4
Automatically, when Windows 98 did not start on the previous attempt.
For Windows Me
Windows ME----------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer.
The Windows Millennium screen appears.
Press down and hold the key until the Microsoft Windows Millennium Startup Menu appears.
Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu, and press enter.
