scan disk / zone alarm.
before doing scan disk, and defrag, i shut down n.a.v. and z.a.... then after finishing both tasks of scan disk, and de-frag, and then re-enabling n.a.v.with right clicking and enabling n.a.v. auto protect in the task bar, and then going to start/ accesories/ to z.a, because the z.a. icon has disappeared from the task bar when i disabled it, and clicking on z.a from the start menu the icon comes back on my task bar ok, but with a big X and i get a notice my true vector isn't running.
how do i get z.a. up and running again after shutting it down from the task bar without resorting to start /accesories /z.a. and then to re-booting the system?
thank in advance, henryhll

"There may be a problem with your TrueVector service. ZoneAlarm is dependent on its TrueVector service to function properly. You may need to refresh the files associated with this service, especially after a networking change, OS change, or ZoneAlarm update.
First, check in the upper right-hand corner of the ZoneAlarm Pro Window. You should see an "All Systems Active" message in green letters (to the right of the lock).
If the panel is displaying "All systems Active" and ZoneAlarm is still not functioning properly, it is possible that some files have become corrupt. To repair this problem, please follow these steps. Please note that this will remove your program permission settings (so you may want to make note of them), but re-establishing them is a simple process.
If any of the steps below does not apply to you, or you are unable to perform the function listed, please continue to the next step.
1. Open the ZoneAlarm program, go to the OVERVIEW >> PREFERENCES tab, and make sure the Load At Startup box is UNchecked.
2. REBOOT - You should now have no ZoneAlarm processes running on your system.
3. Open the Internet Logs directory (in 95/98/ME this will be "c:\windows\internet logs", in NT and 2000 it will be c:\winnt\internet logs, in Windows XP it could be either of these folders). If you need to keep a copy of old alerts, copy the ZAlog.txt file to another location first - then delete ALL files in this folder.
4. Empty your Recycle Bin.
5. REBOOT
6. You will need to start ZoneAlarm manually. (Click Start, Programs, Zone Labs, ZoneAlarm). ZoneAlarm will start up again with a fresh database. Each program should ask for access again if the files were properly deleted.
7. Be sure to REcheck anything you unchecked earlier.
NOTE: If you received an error message upon deleting the files, the original programs remain in the Programs list, or if the problem persists after this, removing the files in Safe Mode will allow you to delete the files properly. If you need further help with this, please reply to this email keeping all text intact as we do not archive previous emails."

Start>run>type "msconfig" ( no quotes ) >startup tab and be sure you have True Vector checked. Reboot when prompted.
Right click on the ZA icon in your system tray and Restore ZoneAlarm control center and go to configure. To the right of the Zone Labs icon you should see TrueVector driver is loaded. If not repeat the above instructions.
Post back and let us know how you made out.

both start at boot up, so thats okay. also after going to z.a.alarm center/ to configure/ true vector is loaded and ready to go, i have no problem with z.a starting and doing it's thing everyday, it works wonderfully, what the problem is, or maybe it's not a problem after all is this ... after right clicking z.a. in the task bar and choosing shut down z.a, in order to do my disk scan, and de-frag function, and then finishing everything. how do i get the z.a. icon to come back in the task bar? or better yet how do i restart z.a?. without the start/ programs/zone alarm, then after clicking the z.a. function, and the icon comes back but with a big X in it, so now that i have the icon back, and to get rid of the X i have to re-boot? maybe after doing scan disk and de frag, and in order to enable zone alarm, just go ahead and re-boot, is that the way it's suppose to work??
thanks again, henryhll

If your computer does require you to kill it to run your maintenance procedures you may have better luck (less problem with TrueVector) if you open the main ZA panel and on the "Configuration" tab, uncheck the option to run ZA at boot. On next boot, it will not load and you can disable anything else necessary and proceed to run your maintenance. If you do this, don't forget to open ZA and recheck the startup option and reboot when finished with maintenance.

It should come thru start>programs>ZoneAlarm.
Try rebooting and see if it helps. In the event that you are still having problems this link to ZA will help you refresh the data base.

I always keep ZA up and running when I do a scandisk or defrag and have never had a problem with it interfering. I do not log any alerts to disk which might be a cause of interference with those programs which need exclusive use of the disk.
I have also found that there were times when true vector service had trouble loading on my machine if I tried after the initial bootup. I have a cable modem and somehow I seem to think that true vector needs to get in their first most of the time in order to be fully loaded but I have also sometimes started ZA afterwards and it has been fine.
