System Restore Problem

Question

When I go to System Restore and try to start it up, I get an error message. It is' framedyn.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.' To show my ignorance, what application are they referring to? Anyone else have this problem?

I have the one that came with my computer and it is for a dim 4500 with windows 2000. If it had ser pack 2 on it, I wouldn't have had to download it would I?

Ok, all that went well but I get a message that file sr.sys XP home edition service pack 2 is needed. I looked on my updates and I have service pack 2 already. Any other suggestions? I'm beginning to think I need a new computer!

I have the operating system reinstallation cd for Microcoft Windows XP home edition. Is that the one?

Ok, I tried that and I can't find the folder sr.inf. There were 2 with the sr prefix but not onw with .inf on it. Any other suggestions? I also wanted to start up in safe mode and can't remember how. What key do you tap while system is restarting? Any help appreciated, I am getting very frustated!

Did you put XP home on this PC?   The disc will say 'Operating System' on it somewhere. A windows 2000 disc won't do.

Do you have your XP home disc, if so what service pack level is it?

Oh, do a flag + E keys and go to Tools/Folder options/View tab, scroll down a line or 2, look for 'hide extensions for known file types' and clear the box, hit OK. now you will see SR.inf when you do the run command. Sorry about that.:smileysad:

Are you talking about system restore while booted into Windows?

If so, try this, if not post back with more information.

1. Click Start, Run, In the Run box, type "C:\windows\inf" without the
quotes and press enter.
2. Look for SR.INF and RightClick on it, then LeftClick it, select "Install"

Follow the prompts, Reboot and System Restore should be ready to use.

Yes, it is Dell cd but it doesn't have any thing about service pack on it.

No SP1  SP1a  , that is a first release home disc with no service pack, cannot use it for my next suggestion.   You can do what is called slipstreaming, a procedure to slipstream SP2 into that  version of Home.   You need a cd burner and some readily available tools to do it, http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp   http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en  here is the Service Pack 2 you will need to download for the slipstream       Try this any way   do a   flag + R keys, type in   sfc /scannow   into the run box,  space between c  and  /  and hit OK, see if it wants the XP CD, if it does cancel it, don't put that CD you have in the drive.. Some times it asks for it sometimes not, give it a try. If scannow runs it will take quite a while with no messages when done. It will automatically replace missing or corrupt system files..

ok, tried that and it had to have the disc so now I will try the other. How complicated is it and what do I do when I download the file. Burn it to a cd?
