task manager i/o reads/ i/o writes

Im trying to figure out why my hard drive reads and writes when no programs are being run. {hard drive light is coming on, hearing the faint grind}

Someone on the forums said go into task manager and on the processes tab, under the view menu, select columns, the click the boxes "i/o reads, "i/o writes" and "i/o other".Does this show what applications or proccesses is reading and writing the hard drive?

He said to not touch the pc and wait a couple of seconds, and you should be able to indentify the application or proccess that is making the excessive reading and writing {white noise from the hard drive}

My question is , to find the process or appplication, would it be the one that has the numbers moving?, how do i identify the process that is making the reading and writing?

Sounds like a problem but it isn't. If you have any maintenance software on your machine like Norton's System Works it will back up data on a regular basis. I wouldn't worry about it.

rko99,

You can get quite a lot of information on what's happening in your computer by using Process Explorer, a free download from here.
