total conventional memory is low

I only have 636K total conventional memory using the dos prompt mem command. I do not have any virus and can not find any other reason for this low level. I noticed this when I was trouble shooting some crashes I was having with DELL phone support. I have reformatted my C: drive twice, once with a debug. Does any one have ideas on this? I also get some boot up errors that "himem.sys is missing" and "can not control A20 line". Thanks

I have no solution, but must say this is exactly why I logged on...I have the same problem, and Dell Tech Support tells me either "it is a virus resident on your system" or "that's the way it's supposed to be" etc. No one response is alike. Dell has sent me a new hard drive to solve the problems, but they are still here...I have also been told the freezing up of my screens and programs for 3-12 seconds is normal...what is going on?
