Trouble loading windows 98 on a Dell Dimension XPS

I am trying to load Windows 98 SE on the above machine. It stalls at the end of the install and locks up. When I reboot, it starts in safe mode, says that it can't complete installing in safe mode, and to start it in the normal mode.

Has anyone had similar experience, and do you know of a solution?

I reformatted the hard drive before starting this procedure.
