Upgrading to a Quad CPU

Hello everybody,

The last time I posted here was way back in May of 2010. I was starting to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 530 I bought at Wallmart. I did'nt know anything about a computer, but JMICHAEL and BEV gave me some suggestions that worked. Ok, here's my question: I upgraded the 530 to 3 HDDs, Intel E8400 core 2 CPU, Evga 550 TI graphics card, PCI audio card, 8gs of ddr2 memory and a Antec 300 hundred mid tower case w/ 4 fans. I also have a 1000g USB HDD for backup. I upgrade from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. The only original Dell item is the motherboard with 1.0.18 bios. Ok, with that out of the way here really is my question: Do you think I can upgrade the CPU to a Quad core (Maybe a Q6600), without any problems. (Do you suggest another Quad CPU?)

Sorry about the idenity mistake. Glad you like to help! Thanks for your advise. After looking at what I already have I decided to look into a aftermarket MOB. Gonna stick with the ddr2 Ram, cause I just spent 100 on it. Everything is working fine with the E8400 processor and such so I'm just gonna enjoy what I have now and upgrade later down the road. It's addicting, you know. Thanks again for hearing me out, you give really good advise with knowledge!

if you purchased the original system from Dell, you have an OEM version of Windows O/S.  You cannot transfer this to another MB.

:emotion-21: Hey Bev,

It's me again. Update on my system: Bought a Asus P5Q motherboard. Kept the E8400 cpu instead of going Quad. Maybe later! New question: I put the G33M02 MOB back in the Dell Inspiron 530 case and got it up and running using the E8400 cpu. Then I removed the E8400 (had to put it back in the Asus) and bought a used Intel Pentium D 940 processor to put in the Dell. Would not work... Will the G33M02 board take a Pentium D cpu or am I gonna have to buy a Dual-Core? I hope that is enough info. :emotion-1: P.S. I'm getting pretty good and applying thermal paste!)

As you have already found out, Pentium D processors are not supported by the Dell/Foxconn G33M02 motherboard.

The following CPU's are supported:

Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2140 (1.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2160 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200(2.5 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

You welcome and good luck.

Remember to, before installing the processor you need to check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher, when support for new Intel CPU's was added,

Bev.
