Vostro 200 CPU Upgrade

Does anybody have a CPU compatibility list for the Vostro 200?  I've fallen back on the computer knowledge curve and find so many processors available. Right now it has an  E2140 and I'm looking at something like the E6300 - a bit faster and not too expensive.  I see one at Newegg for $78 with free shipping.  TIA

Am I wrong or are you talking two different CPU speeds?  The E6700 runs at 1066mhz where as the E5700 runs at 800.  How would that be possible?

I think I am wimping out on the E6700 3.2 ghz because Dell's newest BIOS for the Vostro 200, 1.0.16 was release on 4/27/2010 and according to wikipedia the 3.2 ghz E6700 was released on May 30, 2010, so I don't see how it could be supported despite what the guy on newegg said.  Darn.

From wikipedia article:

Pentium E6700

    * SLGUF (R0)

    3.2 GHz     2 MB     1066 MT/s     12×     0.85–1.3625 V     65 W     LGA 775     May 30, 2010     release date

Looks like it will be the e5700.

It may have been released to consumers a month after the BIOS was released, but that doesn't mean the specifications were not provided to Dell well in advance of that date.

I hear ya, but I checked the speed tests and despite the passmark score the e5700 is only  a little behind the e6700 performance wise.  I don't think it is worth the risk.

Installed the E5700 today and I have been using it all day with no issues.  Wow, I went from a Celeron 440 to this E5700, and it makes quite a difference!

Thanks to Bev. and Unstablemable and et al for the helpful info.

I just upped the BIOS  as well and was able to go up to an E8600 I found in a dead machine at work.  This processor works flawlessly and I have no excess heat and fan noise issues.  Needless to say, it is also extremely fast now.

I compiled a list of all processors that should work in this system From the Celeron-D, Pentium Dual-Core and Core2Duo families.  Included are FSB, L2 cache, core speed and presence of Virtual Technology (VT).  Core2Quad is omitted but all Core2Quads should work as they are all Kentsfield and Yorkfield cores and all are LGA775.

All data was collected and collated from cpu-world's online database.  Many upgrades from the stock CPUs (especially the Celerons) can be gotten off eBay for a very reasonable price these days.  I apologize for the crummy formatting, it's a cut-n-paste from excel.

Core2Quad - All C2Q processors should work

My Vostro 200 works very well with Win 7 64 bit and 4 gig of RAM -

Looking now to upgrade the proc to give it some more longevity, has anyone had much luck with the quads? Your exp and any advice would be appreciated.

Did you use the stock Dell cooler or what was supplied by Intel, aftermarket, etc....

Thanks ahead of time.

I've stress tested the C2D E8600 (fastest Core2Duo from this whole family )and the stock cooler never spun up enough to notice.  The stock cooling IMHO is fairly adequate.  Any of the quads should work well with it and is worth the shot.  If it's loud when under load, then investigate an upgrade.  The replacement of the heatsink might be very intense as it may require you to pull the board to replace the mounting backplate for the heatsink, therefore, I'd take the 'wait n see' approach.  Make sure ou use a good thermal compund like Arctic Silver 5 and you should be set.

If you are looking for longevity, you may not have to pay the premium that a C2Q will run you.  Any of the higher clock or higher FSB C2D CPUs will perform admirably for you, especially if you aren't using apps that are multi thread intensive.  If you aren't, I'd value clock speed over number of cores.  Any of the Wolfdale-6M E8xxx or Conroe E6x50 CPUs will really perform with the higher 1333Mhz FSB and 4 or 6 MB L2 cache.

sqrat,

Installing a Core 2 Quad, depends on the motherboard version Dell installed.

Does your Vostro 200 have either a G33M02, or G33M03 motherboard?

If your Vostro 200 was purchased with either a Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core or Celeron processor and a 300w power supply, this system usually has a FoxConn G33M02 motherboard, that only supports Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and Celeron processors.

If you have a Core 2 Quad processor and a 350w power supply, you have the FoxConn DG33M03 motherboard.

This motherboard can be used for both Quad 4 & Core 2 Duo processors.

To find the motherboard version, download and use CPUID/CPU-Z,  it's a free utility.

I have the Inspiron 530 MT, that's a clone to the Vostro 200, upgraded to an e8400 CPU and the default heatsink works fine

Hi all,

I've been trying to upgrade the cpu in my vostro 200 to the fastest supported cpu and am running into problems.

After doing a fair amount of research, on the basis of several discussions I found on this forum where people have said that an E8600 works, I bought an E8600.

I have a Vostro 200 with bios 1.0.16 (dated 09/20/2008)

Motherboard: G33M02 with CPU-Z reporting the model as 0CU409

Chipset:  Intel P35/G33/G31 Rev. A2

Southbridge: Intel 82801IR (ICH9R) Rev. 02

RAM: 4x Kingston KVR800D2N6/2G DDR2-PC6400 400 MHz CL6 2048 MB sticks for a total of 8GB

Currently running a Core 2 Duo E6300; I've tested a E2160 from another system in it and that works too.

When I put the E8600 in and turn the computer on, the fans run at high speed for a few seconds then the system resets and the process repeats.

here is my CPU-Z validation:

Can anyone think of a reason the E8600 won't work in my system?  Should I return it and get something else?  Should an E8500 work?

thanks!

1. I'll see about getting another power supply to test it with; good idea, I hadn't thought of that.

2. unfortunately I don't have another system that will support the E8600.  Maybe I can find a friend or colleague that does.

3. looking on dell's support site (and their main ftp/http file server) the latest bios I see for the vostro 200 is 1.0.16.

www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

if there is a 1.0.17 bios, can you post a link to it?  I can't seem to find it.  I did find a bios for the Inspiron 530 (which supposedly has a motherboard that is pretty close if not the same as the vostro 200) that is 1.0.18, but i don't think trying that is such a great idea.

4. done...  nothing hanging loose...

i'll try the new power supply tomorrow and see...

Thanks!

Well, I can't check the motherboard revision right now but I do see that you are one version behind with your BIOS.  I know I'm running 1.0.17.  Here's a few things I'd check.

1.  Change out the power supply.  Although the power requirements on the new CPU aren't that much higher, the stock PS is fairly week.

2. If you can, check out the E8600 CPU in another system to make sure it really does work.

3.  More than all others, up the BIOS to 1.0.17

4.  Double check all your steps in rebuilding the hardware.  I've spent too many hours chasing phantom issues because I did something stupid like forgetting to plug something in.

Good luck!

Do you have a Vostro 200 Mini tower, or the so-called Slimline version?

Please post the sSpec number of the E8600 processor you installed.

Is it a Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8600, 3.33GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W.

Replacing the default power supply probably will not help.

BIOS version 1.0.16 is the latest version, released 4/27/2010 published by Dell for the Vostro 200 MT, see HERE

I concur Bev.  I was talking out of my posterior.  1.0.16 is the latest and it is what I have installed on both my Vostro 200s.  I also have the same G33M02 board and CPU-Z specs also match Charlie's specs.  My wife's V200 has the E8600 and my V200 has the E8400 (3.0Ghz).  I might suspect that your CPU is bad.

Best of luck!

Hi Bugsy,

No problem, I have an Inspiron 530 MT, as you probably know is a clone of the Vostro 200 MT with the same Dell/Foxconn G33M02 motherboard and I installed a Core 2 Duo E8400 without any issues after the BIOS upgrade.

Hi Bev,

It is a Vostro 200 Minitower, not the slimline version.

The sSpec number is SLB9L.

The rest of the text that is written on the processor is:

Intel '06 E8600

Intel Core 2 Duo

SLB9L MALAY

3.33GHZ/6M/1333/06

Q820A593

I downgraded from 1.0.16 to 1.0.15; still didn't work.

I re-downloaded the 1.0.16 bios update and went back to 1.0.16 to see; still no luck.

Sounds like the processor is bad...

is there anything else I can test before I send it back?

thanks,

Charlie
