Vostro 200 Slim Memory Issue

Hello ~ I have a Dell Vostro Slim tower that I am attempting to upgrade memory in. It has 2 sticks of 512MB DDR2 5300 Single Channel memory in it. I removed those and put 2 sticks of 1GB DDR2 5300 Dual Channel Memory. Now when it powers on the processor fan stays on and the desktop does not post at all. When I put the 2 512 sticks back in the desktop, it boots just fine. When I install both pairs of memory, the BIOS reads 3GB, but Windows will only read 1GB.

Here are the specs of the memory purchased for this system:

 Type
: DDR2 DIMM
 Capacity: 2 x1GB
 Speed
: DDR2 667Mhz PC5300
 Density: Low Density
 Pins: 240Pin
 ECC/Registered: No/No
 Voltage
: 1.8V
 CAS Latency: CL 4, 4.5, 5

 Thanks,

Hi Jeremy,

The specs look right. What's the brand of the new modules?

Do you get any beeps when you power it on?  That could indicate bad or incompatible memory.

Install the memory and before you power on the PC, reset the CMOS (BIOS) by removing the CR2032 CMOS backup battery on the motherboard for about 10 minutes.

If that doesn't help it could be be the memory.  Dell's have a history of compatibility problems with some non-Dell brands of memory.  Crucial Memory guarantees their memory to work in Dell's (assuming there is not a hardware problem with the motherboard).

There are no beeps when I power it on, the processor fan just runs loudly with no post.  I will try to reset the CMOS and see if that takes care of it.

Thanks for the help!

By chance, does this board only accept single sided memory?  The new memory I have is double sided and the old memory that was in there was single sided...

The memory brand appears to be Koybe.

Below worked for me:

Shut down the system,

Remove the power cord

hold the power button for 20 seconds (Drains all power)

open the cover

Remove any memory you have

clear the cmos with jumber for 10 seconds

put the new memory in, starting with slot 1

clear the cmos again

close everything back up and this should fix the issue.  I may have an extra step or two above, but it worked for me.
