Win98SE OS and Virus attack!
Hi,
I have just had my Win98SE OS knocked out by a virus. I clicked on an E-mail and the screen just went Wham!! and blank. When I try and restart the comp it says "invalid disk." I don't know where my reinstallation CD that came with the computer when I bought it is. Can someone please tell me if I have any options on getting my system back up? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats more likely caused by a virus... a hard drive usually won't fail all of sudden, it'lll have a loud noise and you would be able to notice it if it did happen...
my best guess is to boot up from a antivrius cd and try to run that under the dos mode, and scan for possible viruses...if that fails then read the next suggestion.
my next best guess is to obtain a boot up disk, go in and delete partitions and format the hard drive... however, when you get ready to use that boot up disk, turn that little tab to lock, so the virus cannot be writting on it (just in case if the virus tries to write onto that, it'll just save you time)....plus do not, i repeat, do not put in a different hard drive, not as of yet that is...because that virus could still be saved into your ram and spread into that new hard drive.... then just reinstall the os if its possible....once you get that hard drive up and running, install your antivirus and run it!! like i said, that virus could be installed into the ram...

if that reinstallation disk has the OS on it, then yes, you will have to buy another copy..... but you can still get a bootup disk and delete the partition and format the hard drive! go to a friend have them download the bootup disk information from microsoft's website or if they already have windows 98 or ME you can use either bootup disks....or you can go to staples or a computer store (with your own floppy) and they'll make one for you....i had a virus once and once i put in my floppy it started to write on it as i was booting into dos....so i had to go staples have them create a new one for me from their computers that were on display and they didn't charge me at all!!

Hi buffbison,
Where would I get a "bootup disk?" Plus I don't have the Dell reinstallation disk that came with the PC. I lost it. Would I have to go out and buy a commerical Operating System?
