windows 7 ultimate and dialu

I wish dell would make its download support more user friendly and informative! If there is somewhere I can find information on the different types of downloads and what the name of each download means and when multiple downloads are recommended does that mean install them all etc. One assumes thatservice tag should make downloads specific but going to spare parts, etc. by service tag no gets you a lot of recommendations which are just flat wrong! memory upgrade is an example; pc6400 works but pc5300 is the max that is really useful! I purchased pc6400 only to find out i wasted my money!

I have installed windows 7 ultimate for my daughter!

Apparently windows 7 ultimate does not support dialup; drivers are not there!

i went to dell downloads for my daughters computer and looked up for that computer the communication downloads for her modem card!

there are three files ! Once downloaded, there are no names associated with download so who knows what is what!

Downloads are r6602 exe; r74546 exe ; 133743 exe!

Do I actually need to execute all three/

i realize that dell does not support this, that is fair, but does anyone know why one or all three of these files will not make my windows 7 modem functional?

Also, How do i create a internet icon on the desktop in windows 7! I assume click and drag works but startup, control panel, etc. is so much different that on windows xp, i do not know how to create icons on the desktop such as my computer, etc.

Note: My daughter does have high speed internet, i do not! i want dialup long enough to see internet functionality!

All help appreciated!

It would really help if we knew the model number of the computer in question.  Then someone could possibly help you.

Hi: Thanks for taking the time to point out my oversight! Sorry!

Since i posted the original goof other questions have come up. Perhaps you can answer or direct me to answers for them as well!

The system is a dell dimension 8400!

I have the original xp professional on disk 1 and windows 7 ultimate on a new seagate  disk 0! It was/is my plan to deactivate sata port 1 and probably unlug disk 1 after I get things running! However, it retains the abillity to go back to the  original dell set upif i ever want to!

Windows xp pro works fine!

However when i loaded windows 7, not activated yet, I found that I could not set up a internet connection using dialup!

Device manager indicates there is a problem with the communications device, which I asume is the modem card! I further assume that windows 7 does not have the drivers I need to run the intel modem card pre loaded!

I do not know if theintel drivers associated with  windows xp pro and  the modem will work but went to the dell website to look what was available for download. there are three files, two recommended and one optional!  Would think you only needed one and that is why some of the he-hawwing in the original post! The dell recommendation for pc5400 memory, which I purchased just.... Of course, these drivers I am talking about are the ones recommended for the service tag of the 8400 as originally delivered!

perhaps you know these will or will not work and exactly what to download!  Of course, other recommendations greatly appeciated!

As indicated in the original post, I am  preparing this computer for my daughter who has high speed internet. I do not!

Further research on windows 7 with dell alarmed me in that apparently my printer a dell 961 all in one printer will not work with  windows 7 either  Apparently there are no drivers available! This will be an issue for me or my daughter as both of our printers appear to become obsolete with windows 7! That is if dell's assertions are accurate!

I am beginning to wonder why I might want to activate (keep) windows 7!

Neither of us game and she is primarily interested in microsoft office 7 which we will load after we clear the air on all these other issues!

Thanks for taking time to address any of the above issues you can or will!

Only one of the 3 files listed is the actual driver. The other 2 files are utilities, one for diagnostics testing of the modem plus one to fix a problem "in certain configurations", whatever that means.

The drivers and utilities are unlikely to work with Win 7. Dell doesn't offer Win 7 drivers for the 8400, though other forum members are running Win 7 on this system. I can't say for sure if any of the users with Win 7 on the 8400 are on dial-up.

You will probably have to search the net for a Win 7 32-bit driver or possibly a Vista 32-bit driver that's compatible with this modem card. Maybe you can find the right driver using this wizard... ??

If you can't find a driver that works with what you have, your alternatives may be to purchase either a new PCI modem card or an external dial-up modem that's compatible with Win 7.

Is there really that much of a price difference between pc6400 and pc5300 to worry about..?

Ron

EDIT: Caveat...I know nothing about the site offering to find Win 7 modem drivers, so you download and run their software at your own risk. :emotion-5:

Hi:

Thanks for the reply!

Regarding the memory I mis typed!

So far as I can determine from other posts, etc. PC4200 which is 533 mhz memory is the best this machine can support from a speed standpoint!

Pc5300 (667 mhz)and pc6400 (800mhz) apparently are both recognized but you do not get the speed attribute, only the larger memory size if larger gb memory is purchased!

When I was first researching this I was told that the 8400 would not even recognize pc6400!  Dell said different and you will not promotes it on the parts ugrade pages!  Guess they are technically correct if you are referring to memory size only!

I went to office depot and they said that kingston said there pc5300 would work!  So, I discounted the original informtion that it wouldnot work!

A seller on amazon had two sticks of pc6400 memory dell part no, dell oem packaging, etc. for a good price i think around $60 (forget actual paid).  Anyway I purchased!  It installs fine, is recognized, etc. but I was preturbed that dell was not straight forward! My PC came with 1gb of pc4200 and it will only support little over 3.2g I am told. So, I would have looked for new or used pc4200 if I had known I was not going to get any speed boost! I would have looked for pc4200, pc5300 or pc6400 as memory size would have been the price driver, not speed!

Do not know how accurate my understanding is but that is what it is!

I will looke at your suggestions!

My 8400 has 2x1GB of PC2-4300 (533 MHz) and 2x512MB of PC2-5300 (667 mHz) RAM. All are recognized correctly, but the RAM runs at the speed of the  slower PC2-300. I don't know if it would actually run at higher speed if I took out the old PC2-4300. It all depends on what the bus can handle.

Crucial.com sells 2x1GB of  PC2-6400 for $69 for the 8400, and 2x1GB of  PC2-5300 for $54. So if you paid ~$60 for 2x1GB of 6400,  you didn't do too badly, and it actually works too!

Since you're running a 32-bit version of Windows, the limitation on usable RAM is ~3.2 to ~3.5 GB. That's a Windows problem, and that's why I only went up to 3 GB when I added the PC5300. Wasn't any point spending extra for 2x1GB if not all of it was accessable. And the 2x512MB was only $36.

Let us know if you find the right dial-up modem driver for Win 7 using that site.

You never said if that wizard found the right dial-up modem driver for you. If it didn't, you might want to try the free version of DriverEasy that's available here.
