Windows XP

Question

My last machine had win95 on it, I'm unfamiliar with XP, but trying to learn it quick. Everyone talked me into getting XP, saying that alot of my win95 stuff would work on it, thru the compatibility wizard option. It doesn't.

Can anyone explain to me why there are duplicate folders and how to get around being forced to use that "My Documents" area? I don't want to use those folders that were already there on my computer when I got it, its confusing, and it seems programs are FORCING me to use thos my documents folders by not giving me the option to change the path.

I have a dimension 4500 and its pretty sad that I much prefer my Pentium II with 64 meg of ram to this machine. I'm very close to sending this machine back, I am so disappointed with it.

Also, whats the deal with the non English speaking tech support? How am I supposed to get help if the people don't speak English well enough for me to understand them. Nothing personal to anyone of any nationality, but Dell, if yer answering calls in the U.S, why put people on the phone that don't speak English clearly?

Any suggestion other than the compatibility wizard to try to get all my programs/games from my win95 machien to work on this machine?And please, can I just delete that "My documents" area, and if so, the programs that use that, will they just ask me for a new path?

My advice is to send the machine back BEFORE your first thirty days have lapsed.
Do not delay, if this option is still open to you. I have nothing good to say about my 4400 or XP. Bought it and Dell sweet talked me for the first thirty days and now I cant
return it. Paid for in March and still full of bugs and nothing else. First time I've ever
paid money for something and then was expected to fix it myself. I guess I paid for two years of phone calls so I can become am IT professional.

All I ever wanted was a box that would do what my 8088 did...whatever I asked of it
and a predicable result.

The dimension series apparently has some problems. Don't use standby or hibernate
because they are unstable in XP. Months of weird things stopped when I stopped using them. The rear USB isn't strong enough for my Lexmark X83.

I could go on but.......send the thing back before it's too late !!!

know it well... Sorry, for the sarcasim, Dell has beaten me down. All I want to do is kill
"Stephen" when I see the ad on TV.

First thing, I'm a cyberknownothing. The only progress I've made is with the help received here in Dell Talk. Good folks. Lexmark Support was most helpful in finally
getting my X83 completely straightened out. They told me about the FRONT USB
jack. I never knew it was there... Try it.

As for advice about the rest, I just dont know much about computers. Sorry. I'd send this one back but I waited for it to straighten out and it still hasn't. Now it's mine and I've got that two year deal for great cyber-training, from Dell, to look forward to.

Hey, thanks for the response. Thats what I have, a lexmark x83 and it is supposed to do like 15 pages in black a minute and it does like 1.

Is that the problem you were having with the printer? It was going too slow when plugged into the back usb port? Should I move it to another usb port and see if it goes faster? I was going to go to lexmark for THAT problem, I thought it was a problem with the printer, although its brand new too.

Thanks for the tip about the hyberate and standbye mode.

Its funny, when my sister that I live with saw my computer, she was ready to come here and buy one for herself. It sure looked nice when it came out of the box. Whats funnier is when I called dell to find out what the return policy was, and to see if I could get some help with my stuff, the support guy had to look up return info because its part of customer service and not support, but he asked me why I wanted to return it, and after rattling off a quick list of what was not right with my machine, he gives me the number to customer service and didn't even attempt to offer to help me fix what it was that I was unhappy with.

At least I don't think he did, was hard to understand what he was saying.

The advertisment should be "Dude, I'm getting (RID OF) a dell!"

I appreciate you taking the time to answer me anyway. I don't feel so alone now. Maybe someone will wander along who can help me.

You need to think on the bright side of all the training dell is giving you. By the time your training is up, you'll be an expert. Then all you'll have to do is take up a foreign language, develop a heavy accent so no one can understand you, and you'll be promoted to number one PHONE tech support for Dell.

By the way, in your post, at the bottom, there is a whole bunch of information about your computer. Does MY post have that and if so, why can't I see it, and if it doesn't have it, how did you get your information to post like that?

Go to PREFERENCES Scroll down to the bottom, there's a box about 2 x 3 inches labeled SIGNATURE you put in whatever you want there, click APPLY CHANGES and that will be your signature with every post.

Preferences is on the Dell Forum page in the toolbars, I guess
you'd call it. These folks in Dell Talk are the best !!! You'll learn
to be specific in your posts, as that is what it takes for them to
discern and help. You post it and they will come....
