XPS 420 and ATI RADEON HD 5770 Questions

Hello, I have DELL XPS 420 and I'm want to upgrade my video card.

I bought this computer last year here are the specs :

Core 2 Quad E6600 2,4 GHZ

4 GB RAM

ATI RADEON 4650 HD

Will ATI RADEON HD 5770 fit in to DELL XPS 420?

If so, will the stock power supply 450w (On label it says DC output 450w so i guess that's it.) be able to work fully with this card and specs above?

How do i change the card? I'm confused about those blue "rails" or whatever they are is there a way to take them off?

Thank you for quick answer.

oh btw the bios and windows won't show you the new speed, only cpu-z does.

also make sure you do reboot your pc after applying this "upgrade". I put mine into hibernate and games reacted in a rather funny way after that ;)

I'm glad I checked and found this post..  I was a little worried that it would not meet the power requirements..

Thanks for the info..

I got the  "XFX Radeon HD 5770 1GB DDR5 PCIE Graphics Card HD577AZNFC"

Price: $132.49  from Amazon..

Apparently they are hard to find nowadays.. Tried a few places (Tiger Direct, NewEgg, etc) and they were not in stock.

At Amazone.com it said they had 1 left in stock so I got it..  Looking forward to getting it in a few days.

I just replaced the PSU of my XPS 420 and replaced the HD5770 with a Nvidia Gigabyte GTX-560 Ti OC. Very much worth it in my opinion. Perhaps you should aim for a bigger upgrade if you can, because games like the Witcher 2 didn't really run well on the HD5770, but they run like a dream on the new card.

This was one of the original designs of the HD 5770 to come out.  It was probably one of the most popular ones.  This one will exhaust heat outside of the case versus the later models where they changed to egg shaped look which keeps the chip cooler and runs more quietly, but puts the heat inside your case.   Now XFX has a different design on the market and the new HD 6770 to replace it is exactly the same and only the number has changed.  You should be happy with the one you are getting.

The GTX 560 Ti is a great card, but normally around the $250 price range.  A better alternative would have been the GTX 460 which is better than the HD 5770 and you can get these for as little as $120.  It might have pushed it a bit though on the stock power supply.

I received the card but a bit confused where they tell me to hook up the card to a 6 pin power supply or molex to 6-pin adaptor.  I see only one molex available where I would need two for the adaptor.   They expressly state that each molex connector must be seperate and not sharing power to any other device..There for I can't use a splitter.

Huh why dont you use the 6pin cable that was attached to your previous 8800gt card?

Kelbear1 - Thanks for the info on the different 5770 cards!

I am also thinking about the HD5770, but to replace the HD 4850 in my Dell Studio XPS 435MT (as it has more video RAM, is a little faster, I think, and is supposed to run a lot cooler).  Although that model only has a 360W PSU, I've seen a number of reports of the HD5770 working in it, and the info I've gathered indicates that is uses less power than the 4850.  However, there are a ton of different versions (designs?) of the card.  You note that the earlier XFX exhausts heat out of the case, while newer ones put heat in the case.  The 435MT has a fairly small case, so I'm wondering if I would be better off trying to get an earlier model of the card (like the one fitzger100 bought), or whether it will matter that much (especially since the card is supposed to run cooler overall than what I have now).
