XPS 8700 motherboard and mSATA SSD

Are there any differences in the motherboards between the regular XPS 8700 and the Special Edition 8700?   Or all the differences in the configurations of the add-on hardware (memory, hard disk, graphics card, SSD, etc.)?

If I purchase a non-special edition 8700, and I want to add a mSATA SSD, are there any particular brands or specifications I need to consider for the SSD to be compatible?

I appreciate any help you can provide.

David

Here is the information you requested:   Manufacturer=Dell Inc.   Product= 0KWVT8   Version=A00

I would expect you too could install larger hard drives.

Awesome! Thanks.

It looks the info from the Dell Liaison Andrew F was completely wrong.

I thought a 2TB limit was pretty small for a current machine.

Hi All,

I bought Dell XPS 8700 with 16GB RAM(4 * 4GB) Hynix 1600. Can I remove all those 4 *4 GB slots and replace with 4 * 8GB or 4 * 16GB RAM with 1600? Does the mother board support 64 GB?

Appreciate your inputs

One question that would help XPS 8700 owners: The BIOS of my standard (non SE) does not have the IRST selection available. Only RAID and AHCI. The question: Can the standard XPS 8700 BIOS be flashed with a version that supports IRST so that the mSATA SSD can be used for IRST cache. I have installed an mSATA SSD (128 Gb) and can use it as a standard disk but the IRST driver app does not have the "accellerate" button active. This seems to point to a BIOS difference in the standard and SE editions. Can the standard XPS 8700 mSATA SSD be set up for cache like the SE edition?

Hi ryokan78,

You may accelerate the mSATA drive by setting up RAID between the system hard drive and the mSATA drive.

I would suggest you to uninstall the IRST application from the system and then configure it with RAID. You may follow the steps below:

  • Please ensure the boot mode is set to UEFI in BIOS.
  • Enter the Intel RST Option ROM Utility by pressing + just after the Dell Logo.
    • Select ‘Create RAID Volume’ using the up and down arrow keys, press .
    • Enter a name for the volume, press
    • Under ‘RAID Level’ select ‘RAID 0 (stripe)’ using the up and down arrow keys, press .
    • Let ‘Capacity’ remain on the maximum setting, press .
    • The option ‘Create Volume’ gets highlighted, press .

*Note: Back up any important data before entering the RAID mode. The RAID configuration procedure can result in loss of all data from the hard drives.

Now try to install ISRT application on the system and you should be able to get the option of enabling the acceleration.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reply for any further assistance.

No, the XPS 8700 doesn't support 64GB RAM in either configuration (SE or non-SE). That would require a MB upgrade.

Mine is the non-SE & shipped with 12GB RAM (4GB x2 & 2GB x2). The Crucial tool that I ran says that my XPS 8700 as configured supports up to 32GB RAM.

There is a mSATA port to install that type of SSD, though I haven't tried it yet. I would like to my next upgrade cycle, as well as the GPU.

My system was purchased from Costco for an unreal price of $699 ($350 instant savings).

i7-4770

12GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM

1TB Seagate HDD

AMD Radeon 7570 GPU

Since then, I've installed Windows 7 Pro on a 128GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD & it Rocks! Initially cloned Windows 8 to it, but not the speed I expected, Windows 7 Pro boots 2x faster, seldom do I see the Dell splash screen go by, it boots directly to Windows. I sign in, click the browser on the Taskbar & it opens w/out hesitation.

Regardless, 32GB is the max that the XPS 8700 will run. If the installed version of Windows 7 is Home Premium, it can only use 16GB of it. I don't know if this is the case with Windows 8 non-Pro version (the OEM supplied OS).

Yeah , I talked to Dell technical support and they said the XPS 8700 was expandable to 32 gigs. I had 8 gigs and expanded it to 24 and it recognized it fine.

The non-SE version of the 8700 with Windows 8 (non-pro version) runs 32 GB of RAM just fine.

I think that any Dell XPS 8700 will hold 32 Gigs of RAM. I also think that any XPS 8700 will hold an SSD, and up to 3 4TB Hard Drives. I don't think a plain old XPS is limited to a Nvidia 660. You might have to disable secure booting in the BIOS to make it work, but that is no big deal. My plain old Dell XPS 8700.... OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W Modular High Performance Power Supply EVGA 03G-P4-2884-KR GeForce GTX 780 Ti Superclocked 3 GB DDR5 Boot Drive: PNY Technologies 240 GB Prevail SATA III Solid State Drive Storage Drives: 3 Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance Pro 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 Desktop Memory Model CMY16GX3M2A1866C9R (Red) Wifi: Intel 6235 802.11 Dual Band N600 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4, 2.4/5 GHz 300Mbps I think my plain old Dell XPS 8700 can hold it's own with any Special Edition, but I spent $2,000 upgrading it. It's not exactly a victory for me, as far as costs, but an XPS 8700 can be massively upgraded to possibly out perform a Special Edition, and I will admit the wiring in my computer is a bit of a mess. Just my thoughts.

I can verify that My "Plain" dell xps 8700 has 120 gig ssd and corsair GS800 and a Nvidia Gtx 760sc runs fine and I can go up to 32 gigs ram! so yes for less money than you would have to pay for the xps 8700 se you could upgrade the regular to better than se !

I've got the 'Standard' XPS 8700, NOT the SE edition.

The 'My Dell' tool states it can use up to 32GB's of RAM. The Toshiba drive is the 1TB that was in the machine and I added the WD 1TB as a second mechanical drive and the SanDisk SSD which I cloned Win 8.1 too from the original drive (and now use it for data).

The My Dell also states my Motherboard is 0KWVT8 for the part number. It has 2 4GB RAM sticks from Hynix/Hyundai, HMT451U6AFR8C-PB part number.

It IS fast and boots within 15 seconds.

I think the SE versions basic difference is besides faster video and more RAM is that the mSATA SDD is included and used a cache for the OS basically. The video card and mSata drive is not an option on the Standard Edition.
