XPS One 24 - No sub woofer after upgrade to Windows 7

Hi,

I upgraded a brand new XPS One 24 to Windows 7 (32-bit). Before the upgrade all I did was remove some unwanted bundled software like google etc. The upgrade went fine and the computer hasn't had an issue for a couple of months. However, the only thing that doesn't work is the sub woofer. The realtek software doesn't show a sub woofer and nor does Sound in control panel. I've tried with realtek drivers from the realtek website and also tried removing/reinstalling the Dell Vista drivers but the sub never works.

Has anyone done this and got the sub woofer working under Windows 7?

Cheers, Jonny.

What kind of speaker system do you have?  Do you get the full frequencies from headphones?  There are no drivers for speakers - so they are not OS dependent.  If the sound is OK from the GREEN analog speaker output (you can plug a headset in there to check) then the problem is in the speaker system.

Hi Fireberd and thanks for your response.

The speakers JBL and are built in to this Dell All-In-One PC. The left and right speakers work fine and so does sound on headphones. I'm sure this is a software thing as I've had the exact same issue on my previous Elonex all-in-one pc. On that system the sub works fine under windows xp but doesn't on Vista and Win7. I can even stop it working on XP by killing a Sigmatel process. This system also runs realtek drivers under Vista and Win7.

The sub on the Dell works fine on Vista. Its only after the upgrade that it stopped working and no longer showed in the Realtek software.

Cheers, Jonny

Did you reinstall the Dell (not a Windows/Microsoft installed RealTek) drivers?  If not, give that a shot. Also, check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound - Sound Panel.  Your speakers should be set as the default Playback device and then check the Configuration button to make sure the correct speaker type is selected (probably stereo speakers).

This is a major difference in the way sound is handled in XP compared to Vista and Win 7.  With some sound devices even Win 7 specific drivers are required.

Yep tried Dell Vista drivers and Realtek Win7 drivers.
