Xps One as external monitor

I have a Toshiba Portege works laptop that runs windows 7, and would like to use an xps one 27 inch as an external monitor. Two questions: 1. Do you anticipate any problems with compatibility? Will the laptop be able to adequately drive the quad HD display? 2. Will I be able to use the Touch screen functionality of the dell all in one? I don't know how much of the touch functionality is software driven. The laptop is running windows 7 not 8. In particular, I want to use Excel modelling and work directly from the works laptop but use the 27 inch touch as the display. Any thoughts before I make the purchase? Thanks.

Hi ender4000,

XPD 27 Touch All-in-one system has an HDMI-In connector. When an external device such as a video camera is connected to the HDMI-In, the computer can project the output on the display.

Kindly provide me some time, I will contact the respective team regarding your queries about connecting a laptop to the XPS 27, and touch functionality.

Hi ender4000,

Apologies for the delayed response.

When an HDMI cable is connected between the laptop’s HDMI port and the XPS 27 HDMI-In port, both Duplicate and Extended display modes can be set up. In order for the Touchscreen functionality to work, an USB upstream cable has to be connected between the laptop and the XPS 27 All-in-one system.

Do let me know if you have any further queries.

Hi

Just to pick up on this again, I've just been reading another thread about not being able to achieve the maximum resolution via the HDMI port when using a second monitor.  Can you confirm that this set up will enable the maximum resolution to be displayed on the xps one when connecting the xps one screen to a laptop?

Many thanks.

Hi

I just bought the fully loaded xps 2720, and tried connecting the laptop to it as suggested above. I have two problems:

1. I cannot get the touchscreen functionality to work - I have connected a USB cable from laptop to xps27 as well as the hdmi connector. Does it matter which port on the xps I use? Is there anything I need to do to turn on the touchscreen functionality?

2. I cannot display the full resolution - the maximum that will be displayed is some way below this, and is slightly blurry as not in the native resolution.

Many thanks for your response - a quick response would be appreciated as I need to decide whether to return the xps to dell if I cannot resolve these issues.

Hi, I just received the following private message from another advisor:

"Dell XPS 2720 can only be used as external display. You will not be able to use the touch screen feature.

Thanks and Regards,

Please could you provide any comments on this as it directly contradicts your answer above. Please note that I based my decision to purchase the system on your comment that I could use touch screen functionality when using as an external monitor
