XPS Purchase Q's & Help needed

I've decided on an xps 720. I've had 3 dell laptops and have been happy. I have some Q's maybe you all can shed some light on.

1. Refurb or new? Seems like I can get a similar system for less including and extended warr. I have $2k to spend. OR I can get extra stuff for the same price, i.e. a second HD or better graphics card. Not going to display the unit so color doesn't matter either.

2. Memory. After nosin' around on here a bit, i've read that the 800mhz ram can be 'clocked' to run at 1066mhz. Is this something I can do myself? If so, i'll be back when I get the machine. If not is the 1066 really worth the $$$. I don't game.

3. I've read the arguments for duo vs. quad. Your take, faster duo or as much quad as I can afford?

Lastly,

4. Any noticable difference between 7200rpm and 10Krpm? I've been told the failure rate is higher the higher rpm speed.?.?....

Thanx in advance for any reponses.

1. Refurb or new?  Seems like I can get a similar system for less including and extended warr.  I have $2k to spend.  OR I can get extra stuff for the same price, i.e. a second HD or better graphics card.  Not going to display the unit so color doesn't matter either.

Refurb.  Save a ton of money and get it shipped within 1 day.  There are always coupon codes available to save another 10 - 20% if you search on Google or pay a small fee on EBay.

2.  Memory.  After nosin' around on here a bit, i've read that the 800mhz ram can be 'clocked' to run at 1066mhz.  Is this something I can do myself?  If so, i'll be back when I get the machine.  If not is the 1066 really worth the $$$.  I don't game.

Yes you could purchase and upgrade the memory yourself.  Save a ton of money compared to Dell memory prices.

3.  I've read the arguments for duo vs. quad.  Your take, faster duo or as much quad as I can afford?

Quad Extreme (QX6700, QX6800 or QX6850).  With the Extreme models you are then allowed to overclock in the XPS 720 BIOS.

4.  Any noticable difference between 7200rpm and 10Krpm?  I've been told the failure rate is higher the higher rpm speed.?.?....

BIG difference - espcially in MS Vista.  Your hardrive is the slowest part of your computer by far.  The WD 10,000 RPM Raptor drives are a bit noiser, but fast, fast, fast.

Gotcha!  the Q6600 Quad can't really do the overclock thing, where as the 2930, even though it Duo/dual core can.

The second system is not for a Extreme Quad core, so you will not be able to overclock in the BIOS (although you can do some overlocking using nTune software).

Interesting, and thanx for the reply.  sounds like i need to get the best , extreme proc. the pocketbook will allow regarless of the memory on board, then add and overclock.  as well as the fastest hd the pocketbook will allow.  graph card would be a bonus, as I said i'm not really a gamer.  usin' dell pref account and can't buy the small biz stuff like i wanted, i.e. t34/5400's.  Initially i'd like to stay with xp, but if I do wind up with 2 hd's i can play with a diff os if I want.  that would be the bonus of havin' 2.

Lastly, do I need to have 800mhz ram to overclock and stay away from the 667 or does it matter?  Can you really tell the diff between the 800 vs the 1066?

Thanx again for the responses.

Time to hit the outlet again and check on new arrivals.  :)

Totally disagree.  If you run a system with a 7200 RPM versus a matched system with a 10,000 RPM drive, you will notice everything runs faster - starting Windows, starting up games, etc.

Starting stuff sure, but once stuff's actually in RAM, for the majority of time you're using the system it shouldn't be a big deal for most things.  Nothing wrong with those Rapters, but personally I just don't like the trade off (less reliable, smaller, nosier, etc.)  7200RPM drives get faster year after year anyway, so it's just not a huge deal to me personally.

Although I will say when I replaced the 5400 to a 7200 in my laptop i could tell a diff.  maybe it'll be the same from 7200 to 10k

.?.?.?.?.

Look for one with Quad Extreme (QX6700, QX6800 or QX6850 model numbers)

Avoid a dual core system like the plague.  No reason to go for it since Intel's 2.4Ghz quad core launched last year.

You don't need two hard drives to dual boot an OS.

Regarding drives, I think for most people 7200RPM is the way to go.  I'm not sure how much louder 10,000RPM is, but I don't like extra noise.  For most things the hard drive shouldn't really affect performance anyway.

You are right about the firsts system you listed but unfortunately is doesn't specify exactly which extreme version is in it unless you can find out what the 2930 p/n is..QX6700, QX6800 or QX6850 are the three version of the extreme processor

The plague, huh? :)  So yer sayin' no Extreme's stay with the Quad 2400, Q6600.?.?  That's the only Quad listed/searchable on the Outlet.  Can the 6600 be overclocked.

Now I'm confused.

I think I agree, the diff between the 7200 v 10K isn't gonna be a noticable diff to the average comp person at home.

I know you can dual boot without a 2nd hd.  It'd be interesting to have one runnin' one and the other.....well you can the jist.

Hey PD,

Found your post on the Dell Outlet Questions thread about how to tell the 720H2c machines.

What's the diff in the blk v red chasis?

What does it mean BIN +3 and BIN + 1?

Can't find any =3's.

Also it looks like most of the more expensive 720's have the Extreme proc's.

it's about 50/50 blk v red.
