ZZ Top?

Zztop is a method by which you can return your system to the state it left the factory in. The instructions for using it can be found here.

If you know what .dll file is corrupted you can simply replace that file with a fresh copy from your Recovery disk without reinstalling Windows. Also, if you are running Windows ME you may be able to use the Restore capability to return to a state that predates the problem you are having.

Another question,

My original sound card was uninstalled and replaced by another. How will this work if I do the ZZ Top? Do I just reinstall the new sound card drivers?

Will the old sound card drivers be installed again?

I also JUST got a stack flow error when rebooting the computer. I have no idea what else it said because I tried to take a screen snapshot, but then the computer froze and had to be rebooted again. I have turned it on and off a few times to see if it would happen again. What is the stack flow and how do I check to see if the settings are correct? Do you think it might be related to the other error I get?

Stack Overflow Problem:

Go to Start > Run, type in 'msconfig' (without the quotes) then click OK. When the window comes up click on the 'System.ini' tab then scroll down and click on the + sign next to the [386Enh] entry. Look down the list for a line that looks like:

MinSPs=6

If you find it then click on the 'Edit' button and change the 6 to a 8.

If you don't find the line (which you probably won't) then click on the 'New' button. When the little box appears type in:

MinSPs= 8 (exactly like that)

Then hit Return, OK out then reboot.

If you still get the error repeat all the steps down to finding the line and change the 8 to a 10 (i.e., increase by two (2) until you don't get the error any more). Going with 8 should fix it.

If the sound card is the same model as the original, the original drivers will be installed again and will work with no problem. If the replacement is a different model, you will have to load new drivers after the Zztop is completed.

I am fairly sure that zztop will put the old drivers back in because it is just an image of the hard drive that was shipped. You will therefore have to reinstall your new video card drivers. When you reboot after the zztop install it will probably recognize the new card and try to install drivers for it.

Thanks. I made the changes, and I'll see how it goes. I had never seen the stack flow error before.

What exactly is stack flow? Would it be a cause for illegal operation errors?

Stack pages are 4K chunks of memory that Windows reserves for drivers (a VxD is a virtual device driver). When your system tries to load more than the capacity you have set aside for them, you get the error message which appeared to you. By making the change to system.ini you increased the size of the available memory for drivers.

An out of stack pages condition will not cause illegal operation errors. If not corrected it may result in some driver not fuctioning properly.
