Dell GX280 using Red Hat Linux RHEL4 -> sound stops working when using AIM or GAIM

Hi,

I recently installed RHEL4 on a Dell GX280. I have external multimedia speakers
connected now--after I realized that this computer does not have an internal speaker.

When I use GAIM, or AIM (the rpm from AOL) the sound (ie. instant message
notifications) works fine at the beginning, but then at some point (say 5 minutes
later) it stops working. No more sound can be heard from/for the AIM or GAIM
application...but other sounds in other apps,  including the sound card check in
KDE still work. A reboot usually solves the  problem, although lately I have not
heard sound in GAIM or AIM even after startup. This is really frustrating, since
I miss messages and have to use my Windows PC for IMs now.

Our tech support person had me kill the DSP user/process because that worked
for him--he thought it was related to some issue with the Intel? sound chip that
is mounted in the GX280 motherboard. I had the same issue on a GX270 or GX260.

Can anyone confirm or replicate this issue?

hi,

i see you posted the same question on the Linux forum so no answer should be posted here.

Maybe a moderator will move/delete/lock this specific thread since it does not belong here.
