Click on Start.
Go to Run
In the box type "scanreg /fix" with no "".
This will require a restart of your computer but will hopefully fix the problem you are having.

What operating system is on your computer? If it is Windows ME, boot to a DOS prompt with your emergency boot diskette. At that prompt type c: and press . This will get you to a C:\> prompt. At that prompt type scanreg /fix and .

Help!!! i have looked thru every cd that came with my computer, but i haven't come across an emergency boot diskette. And your assumption was correct- my OS is Windows ME. It seems like a fairly easy problem to fix--i just need the right tools! Is there any other way that the computer will let me type a command? I even tried to hit F8 as someone else mentioned, but -nothing. The only thing that it will allow me to do is hit enter for 'y' and esc for 'n'. The F2 setup key works, but i don't think that i need to do anything there. Any other strategies?

When i choose the safe mode, it shows me nothing but a
black screen with a 'dash'. It won't allow me to type anything.

You should have made your emergency boot diskette when you first received your computer. It is not something that is furnished to you. However, you can download an emergency boot disk from here. (Click the "Download" link on the left and choose the version for ME.)
Once your system is back in operation, you can either keep the boot disk you downloaded or make your own by going to Start|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs and checking the Startup Disk tab.
Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java.

thank you for being ever so patient....in advance!! i am a bit of a novice when it comes to things like this. Just to be clear....download the boot up for winme. When i turn on the computer i will chose scanreg/fix or restore, choose the last boot up date shown, and everything should be okay? i ask because when i downloaded the first boot up, it showed me the message'non-system disk or disk error remove and hit any key'. when i did that it took me to the millenium start up menu. i did not see any of the dos screens that they show on dowload web site. keep in mind that with this project, you'll have to use the k.i.s.s. method (keep it simple stupid). Was there something that i should have known to do that i didn't? please give me your thoughts.
