Code 39 on my CD-ROM and RW/DVD drives
This is a NAGGING problem:
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that has a virus on it and I need to reinstall the OS (Windows XP SP3) but the 2 drives it has:
HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8483B & HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B
...are recognized when you go to 'My Computer' and on the 'Device Manager' they both have a yellow exclamation mark by them.
I tried to 'update the hardware' and got the following message:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
"Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device." (...by the way 'Troubleshoot' is a waste of time)
A search on the Dell Support site says that I need to disable one of the drives and 'flash' the BIOS on the other using a 3.24 floppy!!!...that you create!!!! Which, was difficult to do since '3.25 floppy's' are not easy to find....and the whole process of creating a floppy to 'flashing' a drive is NOT an easy process.
But I did what it said and it did not work....sill have yellow exclamations and the drives cannot be seen on My Computer.....and I still have a virus that I cannot get off the computer.
I tried using an external USB CD/DVD drive and I tried one that I connect to the motherboard....but they too show up with a yellow exclamation when I look at them in Device Manager
Does ANYONE have a clue as to what the hell is going on with these drives?
I am about to chuck this damn computer out the window and NEVER get a Dell again.
This whole process has taken too much of my time...
If reply to me give me a DIRECT link to the solution. I've wasted enough time on this problem I do not need to waste more trying to find something on that damn site of yours....again...!!!

If updating the driver does not resolve the problem, it indicates that there is a problem in the registry. To fix this problem, you may have to remove a few keys from the registry.
Note: Be careful while working with the registry editor because changes done to the registry using the Registry Editor are irreversible and mistakes can leave you with more problems than when you started. Therefore, it is recommended that you make a backup of the registry before proceeding with the changes.
After you have removed the registry keys listed below, you will have to reinstall all applications that you use for CD or DVD recording to make them work properly.
To fix the error by editing the registry, perform the following steps:
Exit and close all applications currently running on your PC.
On Start > Run type Regedit and press the Enter key.
Next, navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Delete any of the following registry entries if they exist under this key:
LowerFilters
LowerFilters.bak
UpperFilters
UpperFilters.bak
Restart your PC and open My Computer to ensure that the CD-ROM drive is visible.
Also, open the Device Manager again to ensure that the yellow exclamation mark and the error code is now gone.

I have the same problem and I need directions how to fix it. I am not sure how to make a backup of the registry before proceeding with the changes that were mentioned by Warren Byle. I also would like to ask 'Arobbins' who asked the Q if the fixed the error code 39 on his computer by following those directions. Thank you.
