FW 5.2.2 fix list

Hi,

some things caught my extreme interest when reading the fix list of 5.2.2:

There is a condition in which multiple drives would go offline causing the array to freeze. My question: IF this happens, what is the right procedure to re-enable these drives for experienced EQL Users?

There is a condition causing the array to freeze when free space in pool default is low. My question: If you moved ALL array to other pools than default, will this config be affected?

There is a condition where after a FW Upgrade, a failover might set the array offline. IF this happens, what can the experienced EQL User do?

Best regards,
Joerg

Joerg,

Q: There is a condition in which multiple drives would go offline causing the array to freeze. My question: IF this happens, what is the right procedure to re-enable these drives for experienced EQL Users?

A: The procedures can be extensive, and do require a support engineer to identify that actual cause of the failure first.  Sorry there isn’t any published “experienced EQL user approved” method at this point.

Q: There is a condition causing the array to freeze when free space in pool default is low. My question:  If you moved ALL array to other pools than default, will this config be affected?

A: Per the Fix list, the condition is only affects the Default pool.

Q: There is a condition where after a FW Upgrade a failover might set the array offline. IF this happens, what can the experienced EQL User do?

A: Just to be clear, this is fixed in v5.2.2, so you will not see this issue if you are updating to the 5.2.2 version of the firmware.  If you are you are updating to the older versions ( 5.2.0 and 5.2.1) in the release notes it is recommended that you restart the array before doing the update

you are correct. it is not really a reboot but a failover. anyways, the array will lose network connectivity for about 5-10 secs.

[Sorry to dig up a slightly old thread.]

Am I correct that a reboot of the SAN is always required after a FW update, or are you being specific to 5.2.2

Thanks!

If you have enough arrays left and the luxury of free space, you could consider a rolling upgrade, too (moving the array to be upgraded to another pool BEFORE doing the upgrade on that one). Thus, you would have 100% security, even if something goes seriously wrong ;)

The restart of the array has always been the normal procedure for a FW update.  As Joerg mentioned, it isn't a restart in the traditional sense of the word... it is really a controller failover typically lasting 5-15 seconds.  Provided that you have you iSCSI disk timeouts properly configured (see attached), on all of your host severs (and VM's), they shouldn't see the disruption.  As usual, plan to do the upgrade during low IO times.  On the FW download page is a document that discusses the update process in detail.

You are right Don, this can take a HUGE ammount of time ;(

In on thread above you suggested to: "I also prefer using the serial ports for upgrades.   I monitor both CMs at same time to more closely follow the process.  In the unlikely event of a FW upgrade problem you're already set to troubleshoot it.   Something like a Digi terminal server makes this very easy to do.  "

Could you explain this a little deeper. I can connect two console server ports to the ser ports of both controllers of the array to be upgraded with ease. But what then? How can you interact when something goes wrong? I would be very intersted in some of your real world scenarios / examples, because if i would have more control about the upgrade process, i could reconsider using rolling upgrades ;)

Best regards,

Joerg

Yeah that helps a lot! Thanks, Don. I am always very interested in how you wizards in nashua prepare for a fw upgrade and how you deal with serious problems. This helps a lot!! Thanks!!
