off-host backups with vmfs volumes

I've been trying to find some way to do off-host backups of vmfs volumes using EQL snapshots. Is this possible?

Backup software I am currenly using is backup exec 2010 r3. I have hit/ve, adbo, and vmware agents already. I just hate using vmware snapshots when eql is so much quicker. Any thoughts?

Thank you

Dan,

Take a look at this:  www.delltechcenter.com/.../EqualLogic+Technical+Content, on that page search for the publication titled: "Deploying Symantec Backup Exec 2010 Offhost Function with PS Series Arrays"

I've seen that before, not really what I'm looking for. This tech doc is for NTFS rather than VMFS. Thank you though.

"This Technical Report describes how to back up and restore NTFS volumes, Microsoft® Exchange, and SQL using Symantec™ Backup Exec™ 2010 Offhost Function with Advanced Disk-based Backup Option (ADBO), the Dell™ EqualLogic™ Host Integration Tools kit, and PS Series storage arrays."

Unfortunately this is what I thought. Oh well, it would be a nice to have feature, especially in larger environments.

supposedly EqualLogic is working on this? Who knows. Thank you for your time though.

I'm facing the same issues trying to find a solution for this.

Currently I'm using HIT vmware to make smart replicas to a 2nd EQL SAN. This works great,  then on the 2nd vcenter server I choose to clone from replica and I can let HIT register all these VMs on the 2nd environnement in 1 folder and use backup exec to backup these VMDKs to tape.

Anyone has an Idea how you can schedule this last step daily to clone the latest smart replica and register the VMs?

Then we would have a good solution for off host back with Backup exec.
