PS5000 backup data file server
Hello,
Question,
What is thre best practice to create a fullback-up of our data storage?
Our situation.
1 Physical back-up server with an iscsi connection to our Equallogic and a tape device connected with SAS controlers
We are using Yosemite back-up software from Barracuda.
The Fileserver is an clusterd Virtual Server Windows 2008 on WMware
with a Lun for its SystemDisk and a direct 2e LUN connection to a Volume on de Equallogic with iscsi. (F: in windows)
About 1TB fileserver data to back-up.
The current configuration takes 23 hours to backup the complete server farm.
The back-up server connects to the fileserver and the other servers and backups the data using streams from Yosemite. Very slow.
The equallogic is scheduled to snapshot the volume with the fileserver data every 2 hours during office hours. 10:00 till 16:00 hour
I would like to automate the following:
- At +/- 20:00 mount the latest snapshot of the storage volume (F:) (located on the equallogic.)
- Back-up the data with Yosemite on the physical backup server.
- After the back-up is finished un-mout the snapshot.
Is this possible our is there a better solution?

The iSCSI Network Utilization does not run above 30% (average 10%) on the first controller and not above 3% on the 2e.

We will try to script it :)
I do not think it will increase performance for us :(
Because......
I'm testing the manual solution right now:
- Yesterday I created a snapshot of the volume I want to back-up fatser. ( volume used by our Virtual Filserver)
- I mounted the snapshot manually on the back-up sever (2 iscsi controlers)
- Adjusted the back-up job to back-up the data on the new disk G: (mounted snapshot on back-up server and not over the LAN to the VMWare server with the iscsi lun to the original volume)
The back-up is still running after 15 hours with 585 MB/Min and sometimes 1,3 GB/Min.
I need to back-up 1253.11 GB.
I'm beginning to believe we have an problem with the Equallogic or the back-up server is causing the problems.
Please advise

We use a Dell PowerVault TL2000 Tape Library with a SAS controller.
Connected with an SAS controller in our back-up server
Drive: ULT3580-HH4 LTO-4 should run 3.0 Gb/s

You don't mention which tape drive/library you are using and how it's connected to the server. This can also play a part in throuhgput.

Sorry, the back-up is still not finished this morning it was on 15 hours at 60% now it is on 78% so no improvement :(
The EQL HIT kit is installed and MPIO is working
We are using 2 Dell powerconnect 5424 switches
I will try to open a supprt case with Dell

I have to wait for our IT manager. He is on holiday and i dont's have the access to the switches. :(
We have a Vlan 50 for the iscsi trafic.
But update.
I used a file from 23 GB .... copy paste :)
The back-up server writes this to a disk on the san in 4 min and 33 sec.
The iscsi lan utilization is on bouth controllers 60% during this process
When i tri to read (SAN to lokal disk) it takes ages and the netword utilization on one controler on 30% and on the other one on 3 %.
1 minute later both controlers are on 0,05% and the cope paste takes ages...

The Iscsi Switch config should be fine. The Iscsi trafic is ok.
I'm not shure but the Yosemite backup software writes to a database (on lokal disk)
Next step would be write to tape. The tape divice is connected to the back-up server with a SAS controller.
In the test with the mounted snapshot the performance was even worse.

Copy to the iscsi SAN is no problem.
Copy back to the server is...
The copy will stall after 2 min. network Utilazation drops to 0,05%
The lokal disk is a Raid 5 with 4 x 10k SAS disks
We updated all the firmware from the mainbord, Perc and sas controllers. Also the driver firmware.
The Battery from the Perc5/i needs to be replaced. I hope that replcing the Battery solves the problem.??
I did a test with IOMeter on a new iSCSI volume (with instructions from Dell support) This test does not show any errors withe the Equallogic,
I do not know how to configure IOMeter to run a test on the disk in the server . But this test should tell us something or not?

Ok The PERC Battery is replaced.
The copy / paste issue is disappeared.
Barracuda claims to back-up direct to the tape device but it shows database files on the local disk.
I will wait until tomorrow and see what happens.
