I wish I was having success with this, granted, I'm using a newer version which has... more issues.
I'm installing the latest version (4.4) of the UWP version, into W10 21H2.
I have a script that runs on first login, everything runs. DCU appears to install, but the start menu shortcuts are missing.
Directories are created, and DCU-CLI works great, but the GUI does not work / launch, and there is no icon created for it in the Start Menu. I have my own shortcut captured from a previous install, and that won't launch anything, either.
Honestly, the whole UWP version of DCU is a trainwreck. Please, just give us a simple, plain old EXE, with normal, traditional shortcuts we can copy onto desktops and such without jumping through 50 hoops! Please!
Here are the lines from a batch script that is called from the First Login section in ImageAssist.
(btw, the script runs fine -- installs other apps without issues, it's just DCU I'm having issues with)
cd c:\Dell\DCU\
DellCommandUpdateApp_Setup.exe /S /v/passive
copy "C:\Dell\dcu\Dell Command Update.lnk" %UserProfile%\Desktop
"C:\Program Files\Dell\CommandUpdate\dcu-cli.exe" /configure -importSettings=c:\Dell\DCU\settings.xml
I watch the above script run, and it all seems to work... Except no start menu icon for DCU, and no ability to launch DCU's GUI.
Event Viewer shows it successfully installed:
(Source: MSIInstaller, EventID: 1033, Notes: Installation success or error status: 0 )
Am I reading the above correct, DCU installed just fine, yet doesn't actually work?
If I uninstall DCU (via command line or gui), and run the same lines above myself (using the same script!), DCU installs fine, and WORKS! -- only when executed by the FirstLogon section of Image Assist do I have issues.
So I thought: OK, fine, I have to install/uninstall/install again for DCU to actually work -- I modified my Dell Image Assist image, had DCU install / uninstall / install -- same thing -- doesn't work, still.
It shouldn't be this hard to install DCU using ImageAssist - this should be a simple checkbox honestly. DCU is a great tool, but the the UWP version is really frustrating to work with, especially with Image Assist.
Making a desktop shortcut was a major trick -- if you go to a system with a working DCU 4.4 UWP install, and go to Start > Run: Shell:AppsFolder and then create a shortcut for Dell Command Update on the desktop, you'll have a functional shortcut, but it won't have a valid icon, so you have to make your own icon, because that's not included in the DCU package, just jpgs, not ico files!
COME ON! Seriously? I want DCU to be REALLY easy for a tech to run with an icon on the admin desktop, so on first boot, they can update docking station firmware.... UGH! I blame Microsoft for the whole unnecessary complexities of UWP, but at the same time, Microsoft's own UWP apps have working icons when you make shortcuts to them, so I blame Dell for that one...
Now I have no idea how to get this UWP version to work with an automatic ImageAssist image... I probably am going to have to add a scheduled task or something, and make that run the DCU installer on login. That's silly, but that's where I'm at after days of frustration.

Hello,
I've shared your feedback with the DCU development team internally. I'll get back to you here with any feedback as soon as possible.

@PHXK12 - Today I tested the exact documented solution above, using the non-UWP 4.4 version and it worked.
@Daniel.Q - thank you for reporting the UWP issue to the dev team!!
