G5 5000 Memory Config
Hello,
I recently purchased a G5 5000 and it came with 16GB via a 2 x 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz/2933 MHz, UDIMM,
dual-channel config. I'm interested in upgrading to 32GB by adding another 2 x 8 GB, but this doesn't seem to be supported, according to the manual. Is this correct? I'm a little confused as the motherboard only lists using all 4 slots at higher memory configs (64GB and up). Here's what the manual has for options:

Those are only the RAM configs that Dell validated for this model. Doesn't mean 4x 8GB won't work, but Dell isn't responsible if it doesn't.
Probably will work... YRMV!

If the 2 modules in a pair (same color retention clips) match each other, then RAM should run in dual channel mode if you add another 2x 8 GB.
Keep in mind that Dell PCs can be very fussy about RAM. And some RAM may not be compatible even though the specs look right...

HI there everyone
I have a G5 5000 with a 16G memory module and there are 3 slots available.
Questions:
1. Is the max upgrade = 64G?
2. Which ram modules are safe to install?
3. Can I install another 2 x16G block or another single 16G block?

G5 5000 supports: 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB modules in each slot. So the max is 128 GB, total.
Always best to install RAM in pairs of matched modules so that it runs in "dual channel" mode which is more efficient and faster than "single channel" mode. Right now, your one module is running in single channel mode.
What to add depends on your needs and budget. Dell hasn't validated 48 GB (3x 16 GB) in this PC model. Doesn't mean it won't work but...
You could install one 16 GB module in the slot with matching color retention clips. Assuming the new module is a close match to the existing one, they will run in dual channel mode. And a new matched pair in the other 2 slots if you want 64 GB.
NOTE: PC is shipped with 3200 MHz memory. However, the memory speed is limited to 2666 MHz in computers shipped with Intel Core i3/i5 processors and 2933 MHz in computers shipped with Intel Core i7/i9 processors.
Many users around here buy RAM from Crucial because they guarantee it works if they recommended it for a specific PC model.

- Now I know it's upgradeable to 128G
- My PC was shipped with Intel Core i7/i9 : hence 2933 MHz in computers shipped with Intel Core i7/i9 processors.
- The computer is shipped with 3200 MHz memory.

I'd like to hook up on that question: I accidently bought a 16GB 2Rx8 3200 MHz (instead of buying two 8GB 1Rx16 3200 MHz) for my G5 5000 (https://www.dell.com/de-de/shop/gaming-and-games/dell-g5-gaming-desktop/spd/g-series-5000-desktop/cd500013co) wich already contains two 8GB 1Rx16 3200 MHz stick. By default the performance is lowered to 2933 MHz which is totally fine. Adding the additional 16GB stick results in a total clock rate of 2400 MHz which is not fine. Would this still appear when adding another two 8GB 1Rx16 3200 MHz sticks? Or is this a general issue?

I just added 2x8gb DDR4 Crucial Ballistix 3600Mhz (1.35V) sticks to my PC which already has 2x8gb.
CPUID showing as dual channel 2400Mhz (well it shows 1197.1 Mhz), so looks like it downclocked from 3k Mhz. Unless you buy ram with the exact same timings. Perhaps a pair of Dell OEM Ram sticks might work?

Which CPU do you have, i3, i5, i7 or i9?
Don't know about using Ballistix RAM 3600 MHz, but you can try this, even though it doesn't sound right...
Put OEM RAM module in 2nd slot from CPU and put Ballistix module in 4th slot from CPU (matching color retention clips). Then put the other OEM RAM in 1st slot from CPU and other Ballistix in 3rd slot from CPU (again, slots with matching retention clips). See if that improves the speed reported by CPU-z.
This works with the G5 5090...

I do not have Ballistix RAM, but for the ones I bought, I did what Ron suggested about putting them in certain slots and now it's at 2933 MHz instead of 2400 MHz that I was getting before.

@Alec_A - You're welcome. Glad that worked for you too.
Just don't ask me to explain why that works. The RAM modules in slots with matching color retention clips are supposed to be identical, but in this case, they're not.
