Inspiron 3662 - Intel Graphics Driver Black Screen Problem
I have a problem with a Inspiron 3362 Desktop (purchased warranty expired on October 1, 2019) which is driving me nuts.
I have narrowed the problem down to the Intel HD Graphics (505) Driver which automatically gets installed either via a Windows or Dell (or Intel) update. As soon as this driver gets installed the screen goes black with just the mouse pointer showing. Windows 10 has started up but you can't do anything as all I get is a black screen with the mouse pointer.
After spending days trying to fix this, to no avail, I performed a fresh install of Windows 10. This initially works as the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is installed and working. As soon as I run Windows Update the Intel HD Graphics Driver gets installed and as soon as that happens the screen goes black with just the mouse pointer. The only way out of this is to switch off the machine. I can usually (doesn't always work!) boot into safe mode, but Windows Update, nor Dell Update works in safe mode (that's Safe mode with Networking). The Intel HD Graphics (505) seems to work in safe mode (so why doesn't it work in normal mode!).
I can do a System Repair via Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery which puts the system back to before any updates. It then boots up OK, but as soon as any updates are installed I get the same problem and just go round in circles.
I have tried:
Installing latest drivers directly from Intel support website. I get the same problem.
Upgraded BIOS to the latest version. Made no difference.
Changed Display Adapter Power Settings to Max. Performance and run Windows Update. Made no difference.
Run Dell Update. Before I did fresh install of Windows 10 this updated to the Intel HD Graphics (505) Driver and I got the same problem. After the fresh install (and before any Windows Updated) it says system is up to date.
Tried a different monitor. No difference.
I was going to install a different graphics card. However, when i opened up the Desktop size machine, I found a tiny motherboard with no expansion slots!
I'm just going round in circles. Does anyone know a fix? Either a Intel HD Graphics Driver that works or stop Windows Update installing it and stick with the Basic Display Adapter (this needs to be a permanent fix, not just for this one driver version)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
System Spec:
Inspiron 3662 - Intel Pentium J4205, 8Gb RAM, Integrated Graphics
BIOS Ver 2.12.0
Dell P2213 Monitor (VGA connector)
Windows 10 Home Ver 1909 (this is after the fresh install - I can't do any updates because my screen goes black!

So I think I now may have a working system. I've no idea why or how though! Yesterday I did yet another Windows 10 re-install using the Dell SupportAssist OS - Reset option. I have done this many times before and it has always re-installed Windows 10, rebooted, instigated updates, then failed with the black screen as soon as it updates the Graphics driver. This time, after it re-installed, I disconnected it from the internet so it couldn't automatically do any updates. This allowed me to boot the PC normally into Windows. At this point it's using the Basic Microsoft Display Adapter. After yet more internet searching i came across a thread where the user had black screen problems on Windows 7 ( or could have been 8 ) and this was due to the Aero theme. So I went into settings and changed the theme and a couple of colours. I then plugged back into the internet and ran Windows Update. This eventually finished doing all its updates around midday today (why does it take so long!). The PC is still working, I haven't seen a black screen all day, Windows says it's up to date. It's still using the Basic Microsoft Graphics Display. Windows 10 version is 1909. So why is this different this time? Why hasn't it tried to update the graphics driver this time like it did numerous times before? The only things i've done different are change the theme and colours (can't believe that would cause such things!) and manually instigated Windows Update - I don't see why that should make any difference. Do Dell / Microsoft change what gets updated if there are known issues? (This must be a known issue!) I've just read there are lots of similar problems with Intel Integrated Graphics on Windows 10 2004. Could it be that before it was updating to Windows 10 2004 and now somehow it's not and sticking with Windows 10 1909? I'm baffled but pleased, for the time being, as I have a machine that is working. Just now need to re-install all the applications and restore documents etc."
Thanks to everyone who came to my need.

Install clean then immediately get the INTEL Driver assistant. Not supported doesnt mean not working.
A pain but it can work.
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html
To get the DCH video drivers.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO
You can then FORCE update to May 2020 version 2004
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=799445
And download ISO of the latest version with the media tool.

Many thanks for the info.
I have already tried the Intel DCH Drivers via the Intel Driver Assistant. As soon as it gets installed the screen goes Black!
I will try it again in the order you suggest and see what happens. I probably wont get chance to do this for a couple of days.
Thanks again for the info.

I've tried the above suggestion with the DCH drivers and reinstalling Windows but still no luck I'm afraid.
I've also tried installing much older versions of the graphics driver on Dell's recommendation, after reinstalling fresh copy of Windows 10 and that doesn't work either.
I can reinstall Windows 10 (without doing any updates) and can get the PC working. This is with the Microsoft Basic Graphics Driver. As soon as Windows (or Dell, or Intel for that matter) updates, it installs the Intel HD Graphics 505 Driver and as soon as that happens (not after a reboot, or after it's finished updating, as soon as it happens) the screen goes Black with just the mouse pointer showing.
The PC then won't boot into normal Windows mode. Where there should be the Windows 10 logon screen it's just a Black screen with the mouse pointer. Weird thing is I can boot into safe mode and it works - with the updated graphics driver.
It's driving me nuts!

Is this Win 10 v1909 or have you recently updated to Win 10 v2004?
If it's v2004, you might have to revert to v1909.
