Inspiron 3847 with WD19TB Dock

Inspiron 3847

Inspiron 3847

I use my personal Desktop Inspiron 3847 at the same desk where I work with my laptop, docking station, and double monitors. The 3847 worked with my old dock (now broken and recycled) by plugging it into the USB-A port on the front of the computer. The new dock (WD19TB) has a USB-C connection to the computer, and when I connected it to my 3847 using a USB-C to USB-A adapter it didn't work. Is that expected and is there anything I can do to make it work? USB-C PCI card? Video card? Settings? Driver?

Based on your description, it seems like the issue might be related to the compatibility between the Inspiron 3847 and the WD19TB dock. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:
Check compatibility: Ensure that the WD19TB dock is compatible with the Inspiron 3847. You can check the documentation provided with the dock or contact Western Digital support for assistance.
Update drivers: Make sure that all necessary drivers are up-to-date on both the computer and the dock. This includes USB drivers, video card drivers, and any other relevant components.
Try different cables: If possible, test the dock with different USB-C cables to see if the issue persists. Some cables may have issues transmitting data properly, which could cause problems with the dock.
USB-C PCI card: Consider installing a USB-C PCI card in your desktop computer. This will allow you to connect the dock directly to the PCI slot instead of relying on the USB ports. Keep in mind that this solution may require additional hardware installation and configuration.

WD19TB dock is a thunderbolt docking station.  It's compatible with thunderbolt connection devices.  Your Inspiron 3847 does not have thunderbolt port for connection.  Your PC can only work with universal USB docking stations, aka DisplayLink.  There is no other option.
