Inspiron 3891, Event Viewer error - Usbupdate.exe fails

Hello,  I completed a fresh restore/install of Windows 11 and keep seeing this error in the event viewer. Internet research suggests the UsBUpdate.exe originates from Dell. I have no new updates available in Windows update or Dell Update.  Any advice?

RoHe - Give me a few minutes, and I'll get back to you with the results of the changes in services.

One final note before calling it a day on this one. Using the "Repair" feature available thru Windows Settings/Apps shows no improvement. Catch you down the road.

I apologize for responding in the wrong forum.  I was simply reading and responding to a most annoying and puzzling situation on my PC in the first forum that addressed the issue. To answer your question - BIOS Version/Date   1.2.1   3/25/2022.

I had already uninstalled Dell Update, but started getting the error again.  I just disabled the Dell SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist Remediation in services.  Will let you know the result.

RoHe -- Neither service is present to disable in the Inspiron 15 5510 (Windows 11). I would not expect to see anything related to Support Assist since I currently have it uninstalled. Regarding the XPS 8930 (Windows 10), there is no service listed for Dell Update, however there is a Dell Support Assist service set to Automatic Delayed Start. BTW - I'm out of time for this evening. Thanks for the assistance and suggestions.

Mine is an inspiron 3891. Bios is latest. I think 1.7.0

I have the same error and own a Latitude 7320, so the issue is not related to a model in specific.

I am seeing the same issue on a user's PC.  The USB devices do drop out, disconnecting the USB Device from the USB port and reinputting it appears to fix it.

I am going to try and run the updates that show in support assistant, then uninstall it completely.

I have the same issue with my Alienware R8. It started after Windows 11's latest cumulative update (KB5014019) was installed. I did not make any major changes or driver updates to my system besides that Windows update. I've also read on another forum that the Killer Networking services could be the cause, although I don't believe it entirely.

Same thing. On all four of my Dell PCs (Inspiron 660 and 3650, XPS 8920 and 8940) all running latest WIN 10. Reoccurs when I run a Dell Update 4.5.0 check (at least the first time I do so - when it actually seems to do something extensive). Earliest date I see this error flagged across my four devices is the 27th. The 660 does not have Malwarebytes on it.

Strange; I'm seeing the error logged on my Vostro 5890. Eight occurrences in rapid succession at 9:32:29 to 9:32:30 PM on May 28, and not before or since (Windows 11 was installed March 31; system had been up since 11:17 AM). For what it's worth, at 9:32:32 the DBUtilDrv2 service (from Dell) was logged installed.

5/30/22 Morning status update - The XPS 8930 (Windows 10) remains without any changes since the error reports were first recorded. Dell Update and Support Assist are fully functional. After several reboots one thing has changed and one has not.  The error reports have stopped following each reboot. This is not that surprising to me as I've seen some issues resolve themselves after multiple reboots. However, the error reappears each and every time I run Dell Update manually.- as has been the case all along. As to the Inspiron 15 5510 (Windows 11), Dell Update and Support Assist are currently uninstalled. As one would expect there are no error reports present after multiple reboots and of course none related to Dell Update being run manually (it's not available to test). I will reinstall Dell Update, reboot and check for error reports following the reboot and after running Dell Update manually.

I have been seeing the same problem since 27-MAY after updating dotNET 3.5/4.8 (KB5013889).

usbupdate.exe fails eight times while running either Support Assist or Dell Update (but not on restart). I installed the latest Windows Update Preview (KB5014019) in the hope that this would solve the problem - it didn't.

I had similar problems (including BSOD) two months ago when Support Assist was updated to use dotNET 5.0.15 (KB5012416) - this was fixed on 12-APR (patch Tuesday) with the dotNET 5.0.16 Update (KB5013354).

Are these two issues connected by dotNET updates?

usbupdate.exe does not exist in c:\windows\temp\inv????_tmp\Executables\ (where ????, a hexadecimal number, changes every time).

Is usbupdate.exe a Dell executable?

I am running Windows 11 on an Inspiron 3671 - s/w is up-to-date and I am not seeing any other errors.

To all - I'm going back and forth with Dell personnel via private message. I'm going to list the points made in all comments thus far and forward them to Dell hoping that the collective experiences of all will help them find a fix soon. Chime in if you feel I've missed anything important that should be added.

1. Virtually everyone reports the errors appearing no earlier than May 27.

2. Uninstalling Dell Update or Support Assist individually does not stop the error reports.

3. Uninstalling both Update and Assist does stop the error reports.

4. Some but not all state the error occurs during a reboot.

5. Everyone reports the errors occurring when running Dell Update manually.

6. No one has reported the presence of malware after running scans.

7. The error occurs exactly 8 times in a matter of a few seconds.

8. Running checkdisk, sfc, or DISM finds no issues present

9. There has been only one report of a system performance issue related to this problem. One contributor stated that USB devices dropped out following the error, but that was fixed by unplugging the device and plugging it back in.

10. Almost everyone spotted the error report after a Windows update or an update to Support Assist - updates that are generally available to all and not targeted at specific systems.

11. There has not been enough feedback yet to determine if disabling services related to Dell Update and Support Assist has any effect on the problem.

Hope this helps!!

I have the same issue on my XPS 9560 since 5.28, I uninstall Dell delivery, Dell Update etc. and that seems to solve the issue.
