Inspiron 3891, Event Viewer error - Usbupdate.exe fails

Hello,  I completed a fresh restore/install of Windows 11 and keep seeing this error in the event viewer. Internet research suggests the UsBUpdate.exe originates from Dell. I have no new updates available in Windows update or Dell Update.  Any advice?

@AustinEd thanks for the summary.  Adding what I have learned - I uninstalled the Dell Update and disabled the Dell SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist Remediation in Services.  No UsbUpdate.exe errors since doing so, which was last night.

So there seems to be a bit of improvement after uninstalling/disabling Dell apps and services.

Given that it's a 3-day holiday weekend, I probably won't hear anything from my Dell contacts before Tues. I'll let you when I hear anything...

And as I said, if PC is working properly, just ignore these error messages, for now...

I am seeing the same issue on a user's PC.  The USB devices do drop out, disconnecting the USB Device from the USB port and reinputting it appears to fix it.

I am going to try and run the updates that show in support assistant, then uninstall it completely.

Your USB dropouts sound more likely to be a Power plan setting.

Open Device Manager and expand USB. Double-click each USB entry and if it has a Power Management tab, uncheck the box "Allow PC to turn off..."  Now repeat same thing for all Human Interface Devices listed in Device Manager that have a Power Management tab.

Next, open the Windows Power & Sleep screen. Click Additional Power Settings. On next screen identify the active Power plan and click Change Plan Settings. On next screen, click Change Advanced Power Settings.

On that last screen, disable: Hibernation, Hybrid Sleep, USB Selective Suspend, and PCI Express Link State Management. Save the changes to the Power plan and reboot.

Hopefully that stops the USB dropouts, but probably won't effect the USBUpdate error messages.

This exact problem started on 5/28/2022, a Saturday, Memorial Day weekend.  This in itself is odd.

I have an Alienware R12, latest BIOS and all updates.  My main system is Windows 11, all current updates.  This is the system I first noticed it on.  I have multiple dual boots on the same hardware.  I have checked this issue on a seperate Windows 11 OS, and on the Dev Insider version and the Beta and Release Preview versions of Win 11.  I have also checked this on multiple Windows 10 OS's  on the same hardware.  In all case, on all OSs, the issue is present.   USBIEUPDATE has failed.

Same issue on Alienware Aurora R11, started same time, only seen in Reliability Monitor.  When it happens, rapid fire errors, system froze last night while simply navigating desktop.  Obvious Dell bug.  I am confident Dell will get to the bottom of it.  Mods, inbox me if you need diagnostics, I have the time to work with someone to get reports made if you need them.

Aside from freezing (which is bad enough) there are no other symptoms that I can see. I will revisit here after a day or 2 of Dell digging into this.  Thnx

FWIW, I don't have SupportAssist, SupportAssist Remediation Service or Dell Update installed on my XPS 8930 (Win 10) and have not seen this error message, either in Event Viewer or in Reliability Monitor.

How do you keep your BIOS and drivers up to date without them?

@silly_Lilly  I just browse the XPS 8930 support page using my Service Tag looking for new updates.

I have a separate "software" folder where I keep the driver/BIOS files I download, even after installing that update. That makes it easy to confirm if the file listed on the support page is a newer version (eg, higher version number) than the last one I downloaded.

Keep in mind that Release Dates can sometimes change, even if the version number hasn't changed. So only go by version number when comparing new vs old...

You can download and install the Bios and Driver updates directly from the support page for your Service Tag number. I do that most of the time and only use Dell Update and Support Assist occasionally.

Same here. XPS8930. W10 21h1. Seen in event viewer and rel monitor. Appeared on 5/27 with 8 errors on boot. Did not occur again during any boots until today, 5/30. 8 errors on boot which appear right after Dell services started up. Only recent updates were 2 intel "optional" updates on 5/25 which now cause a WMI warning that appears at every boot about intelMEprov. Also I see today the optional updates link and feature update link in Windows Update are gone. I know there are a couple optional in there, and I still need to do the 21h2 update.

I have 8 machines (all different models) with this UsbUpdate.exe error. All of the errors  occurred on May 27 or later.  Hopefully the following observations will help identify the problem.

Models:

Inspiron 3793
Inspiron 3593
Inspiron 5579
Inspiron 3464 AIO
Optiplex 3070
XPS 8900
XPS 9360
XPS 17 9710

All have SupportAssist installed.  Dell Update status varies. No Windows Updates have been installed since May 15. No machine reboots occurred within a few days of the errors.

All machines have a Scheduled Task "Dell SupportAssistAgent AutoUpdate" configured to run only when the user is logged on.  The errors all occurred at or near the time of the scheduled task.

@QTechSB Kindly add to the list G3 3579 laptop.
Running the latest version of Windows10 and latest BIOS 1.21.0
First time I see the error logged was on the of 27th or 28th of May too which was right after a SupportAssist update. No Windows updates have been installed in the 2 weeks prior to registering the error, and I haven't installed any new software either.
