Inspiron PC - Sleep issues

When my PC goes into sleep mode, rather than waking up normally, it now wakes up but with the message 'did not shut down properly'. As a consequence all of the applications that were open were closed (forced) and can only be 'recovered'. Any solutions to this issue?

How do you put it in Sleep mode? What model computer and which operating system? See this about shutting down properly-- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/shut-down-sleep-or-hibernate-your-pc-2941d165-7d0a-a5e8-c5ad-8c972e8e6eff#:~:text=Select%20Start%20and%20then%20select%20Power%20%3E%20Shut%20down.&text=Move%20your%20mouse%20to%20the,out%20and%20choose%20Shut%20down.

The power button on the computer tower is a Power On only button. It is not an off button except in special circumstances such as when the computer is not responding.

@sikla  I presume this is your Inspiron 2350 which was having startup issues...

This might be a Power plan issue so try making these adjustments:

Open the Windows Power & Sleep screen. Click Additional Power Settings. On next screen identify the active Power plan and click Change Plan Settings. On next screen, click Change Advanced Power Settings.

On that last screen, disable Hibernation, Hybrid Sleep, USB Selective Suspend, and PCI Express Link State Management. Save the changes to the power plan and reboot.

Does that help?

Hi Ron,

Indeed it is!

I followed your suggested solution but unfortunately it did not work. I still do not have an effective sleep function.

I have had a look in the event log and as a consequence of putting it in sleep mode this is what happens - 'The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.'

From the event viewer - information - Kernal-Power - I note the following: 'Connectivity state in standby: Disconnected, Reason: NIC compliance'.

I suspect that the above is of little help other than confirming what has happened.

That kernel error is generic. You get that whenever the PC shuts down without proper turn off...

  1. Boot to desktop
  2. Open Power & Sleep screen
  3. Click Additional power settings
  4. Click Change what power buttons do
  5. What are the Power and Sleep buttons set to do, eg, shut down and sleep?

Open a CMD prompt window, Run as administrator

At the CMD prompt, type in: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter. Be sure to put one space ahead of each / in this command. Copy error message(s), if any.

Assuming no DISM errors and back at the CMD prompt, type in: sfc /scannow and pres Enter. Be sure to put a space ahead of the /. Copy error message(s), if any.

Assuming no sfc errors, reboot and see what happens.

And I guess it's possible the power adapter is ailing

Thanks Ron.

With the first CMD run the only message I got was  -

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.19041.329

Image Version: 10.0.19041.508

There were no errors reported. Neither were there any errors reported with the second CMD prompt. Unfortunately I continue to have sleep issues. BTW, it does not matter whether I initiate the 'sleep' or whether I leave the desktop unattended - on my return touching the keyboard or the mouse wakes the desktop but all applications have been closed and I get the did not close properly message.

How are the power and sleep buttons set?

At least DISM and sfc didn't find any problems.

This seems like this is a common issue, so see if there's anything helpful here, here, and here.

You've already tried a few of their suggestions, but some of those sites say you need to enable Hybrid Sleep, but I had you disable it. So having it enabled originally didn't make a difference for your problem.

What build of Win 10 is running? v1909 or the new v2004? Not clear what the last version of Win 10 Dell tested for compatibility with the Inspiron 2350 is. And the video and chipset drivers for this PC model are pretty old too...

So you may want to set Sleep to Never, and set just Win 10 to turn off the display and HDD after a suitable period of inactivity...

Hi everyone,

I've jumped on this thread after an incident occuring twice where I've got to the point where a box has been sent out to collect my Dell Inspiron 13 5000. I'll explain;

With the laptop set to go to sleep when lid closed, inactivity or power button pressed, I have come back to the laptop to find it unresponsive. All, and I mean ALL diagnostics do not bring back the laptop. The laptop has some small amount of reserve heat, as if its stuck froze in the sleep state. No noise at all. I had tried everything. On both occasions (last time 8 months ago) and most recently, I've had to wait days for the battery to die. I sped it up somewhat this time by plugging in items via USB to charge, That's also the strange thing, it permitts the charging of other devices even though it's effectively off. I presume froze in sleep state somehow. This morning I plugged in another device to help drain the battery and this was unable to charge. telling me that the juice was all gone. I connected the power again and the laptop responded and began to charge.

I must also add that the power adapter being connected had no effect at all in getting the laptop back, the battery charge indicator LED would fail to light every time. Very strange.

I've left the case open as I'm frustrated that this has now lead to around 5 lost days with the laptop.

Any thoughts?

@Joshua50019  Have you read this thread? Sounds similar...

Hi Ron,

It is similar but not quite the same. Just wish there was some kind of non intrusive way of getting the laptop back that didn't involve connecting the kitchen sink in order to drain down the power. Very strange. I know what to do next time now but it's very bizarre!

@Joshua50019  Just put it in the box and send it back so they can deal with it...

I will have to wait until I've got some leave as this is all I have to work on.

I suppose you haven't got any ideas what this could be then? Have you heard of it happening before?

@Joshua50019  - Did you try changing all the Power settings I posted on page 1 of this thread?
