Mouse scroll wheel works but goes in both directions, #2

I have the same problem, and it happened twice in 2 different models, both dells and wireless.

One happened a year ago, and google and found nothing. Now another mouse, happens yesterday. The one who happened yesterday is also about a year from the purchase.

Changing the mouse to use on multple different computers regenerate the same issue. It very much looks like a hardware issue. Obviously, infuriating.

Just FYI - I never found a solution.  Finally just bought a new mouse, and I haven't had the same problem since.

I believe this may be a mechanical problem related to the wheel axle length. If I apply mechanical pressure to the left on the wheel while scrolling, the problem goes away. This kind of pressure forces the wheel axle further into the encoder slot and thus makes a better connection between the wheel and the encoder.

I have had the same issue on multiple Dell mouses (mice?). It seems to work fine for about a year then the scroll issue starts as described above, i.e. you scroll down and it'll jump up one scroll for each 3-4 down scrolls. I've been through about 4 of them and the issue happens on all. The sceptic in me believes the profit margin on these mouses (mice?) is probably pretty high so its a good way of getting users to buy another one each year, but then it could also just be poor workmanship on the mouse itself. Not a techie so not sure if there's even a way the software could be manipulated to cause this problem intentionally. If not, it's likely just normal wear on the scroll wheel. Thankfully, a new mouse is ~$10, but still frustrating nonetheless to have to purchase a new mouse every year or so.

I own a mouse model MS5320W that had the same problem with the mousewheel. I've fixed it cleaning it with contact cleaner. After a good spray in both sides of the wheel and a few seconds to dry out, it was smooth as new.

The same problem, it wasn't enjoyable. found this thread. I have Alienware wired/wireless gaming mouse. I had it for just over a year. It is model number AW610M- Lunar Light. I sprayed CRC Brand QD Electronic Cleaner on both sides of the wheel. It dries in seconds. Plugged back in, and whoosh, it works like new. Thanks for the tip TgEtGe!

I have two dell mice doing the same thing. Laptop and my desktop. Cleaned both and they are still doing it and it is driving me crazy. Both of the mice are just about 1 year and a couple months in production.

I've also experienced this problem, with the scroll wheel. I have a MS3220 corded laser mouse.

I tried opening it and cleaning it, but the problem persisted.

Finally I used a lubricating oil on the scroll wheel sensor housing (to the side of the wheel) and that seems to have done the trick. It seems to be a mechanical issue after all.

Had same issue with my Dell MS116P and just decided to search on youtube for a cleaning fix and found this https://youtu.be/8ygFQR5jslc and the cleaning of the internal scrolling wheel did the trick also applied wd40 on the clicks as well, now the mouse is functioning as new.
