Processor Upgrade Inspiron 3847

Our son has an Inspiron 3847 desktop with an i5 processor.  We’d like to upgrade to an i7.  Can someone help with the correct part number?

We were also wondering if we would need a new cooling fan.

I found this processor (pictured) in an ad.  Does this look correct?

Thanks!

No need to upgrade cpu heatsink fan but you should clean the old thermal paste and apply new paste using appropriate technique. Dell factory tends to apply too much paste IMO. i7-4770 and i7-4790 are the most common non-enthusiastic upgrades from i5 4th gen. The mainstream i5 and i7 4th gen cpu have similar TDP.

These did ship with 4790 i7 CPUs, but not the unlocked "K" processor.  That's the wild card here.

The K CPUs are designed for boards where you have overclocking options - not the case with the model you have.

You may be better off buying an i7-4790 non-K CPU.
