battery begins charging after a while
a few days ago when i plugged the charger into my dell inspiron 5999 it has been saying "plugged in" and it doesnt charge but after about 1 or 2 hours it begins to charge and ever since that day i have been having the same problem every time i want to charge my laptop.
and also while it says "plugged in" and i restart the laptop the bios says that the AC adapter plugged in is not supported and therefore it wouldnt charge the battery but just power the laptop (dont remember what it said exactly but it said something like that).
just to mention again it does charge but it begins charging after 1 or 2 hours.
what i have tried to fix the issue:
- reseted the bios to default settings
- updated the bios.
- drained all the power from the battery and tried charging it.
- removed the battery and put it back.
- hit the laptop (just in case that was the solution )
- tried a different power outlet
please help!!

Inspiron 5999 doesn't exist , i think you meant 5599
Whenever you get a message "AC adapter type can not be determined" means either of these 3 are failing
1. BIOS ( firmware misreading information) - Update BIOS
2. AC adapter : Not supplying enough power required for machine to run and charger battery : Try a new one
3. Motherboard : This is the worst case, and requires a replacement Motherboard.
If BIOS is already up to date, take your computer to a computer shop and asks for a compatible Charger with exact wattage as your original charger if can get a dell branded charger that would be great. If it works pay for the charger.
You can confirm that the charger is working by rebooting to BIOS (F2)
Reboot to BIOS > battery information : Check if BIOS is able to detect AC adapter and it's wattage, It would show something like (65w, 90w) A Bad charger would show wrong wattage or say "Unknown"

Your laptop has a S.M.A.R.T. power system. "Both your battery and AC adapter are S.M.A.R.T. "
Your AC adapter uses the center pin to communicate with the laptop over the SMbus to charge the battery.
When it reaches your upper preset limit it should stop charging and only use the AC adapter power.
At times it may charge just enough to keep the battery at that limit.
When you disconnect the AC adapter and it reaches the lower limit it should warn you of that fact.

i checked the wattage of the AC adapter through the bios as you said and it said unknown. i had another dell AC adapter which was the same as the one that i used and when i plugged the other AC adapter the bios wattage said unknown again. which means that theres something wrong with the bios reading. but I already updated the bios and the issue still remains. so that means there's somthing wrong with the motherboard like u said.
unfortunately I cant take my laptop to a computer shop cuz my country is under lockdown, so once its over ill get it checked.

Unfortunately it's Motherboard.
You can use the same machine same way
However , incorrect wattage can cause more issues in future such as Degraded performance, Lower CPU clock speed.
And HTML is programming (for beginners)
